Then everything is transparent. I have no .matplotlibrc file. I pulled the
most recent version of mpl. And that solved the issue.

The original issue can be found at
https://github.com/matplotlib/matplotlib/pull/1591 and so I suggest this
might not be an issue with matplotlib >= v1.3.
