This is an often repeated question, and the last time I remember it being
asked, someone pointed out that the matlab *.fig files are actually *.mat
files (haven't personally confirmed this). This could provide a way
forward if someone wanted to do the leg-work to make a stand-alone module
to achieve this.
On a related note, it looks like we are going to have a beta version of a
pickling solution available in the upcoming release.
