Re: Desparately need mc for Win8.1 64bit?

2016-09-18 Thread chris glur
Imagine what a relief to be HOME with Mr.Norton [of the 70's]?
Thank you !!

After using RPi:linux:curl to fetch the misssing half of *.7z,
via the slow problematic connection and copying to Win8.1 by
USBstik, the cartoon-system's behavior couldn't be 'logged'
since MrNorton had not yet come-alive.
So, I've lost the knowledge of what the installation problem
was. [BTW I've often wondered how much PeeCee is in non-Anglo
societies: eg. how "problem" morphed to "issue"].

Now let's see if/how FM can help paste this to that other hatefull
cartoon-based:Gmail to which my access is locked.

OMG, FM also shows the line-len; like the superb mcedit.
Of course, the lameness of the mouse, compared to *nix, is not
caused by -- nogmp.

Thanks to all contributors.

Win8.1 x64 sees the 10MB *.z7 on the USBstik
as a known type.
But where's the documentation of how to expand and install it,
without first getting married to M$ ?!

== TIA

Thanks,
 further frustrating research reveals:
SIZES: *7z=1M; *msi=0.9M; *7z=0.65M

With the M$-cartoon-based OS I have no control over nor idea where the
d/l-ed files will be located, nor realistic way of searching.

The apparently automated installation process fails with error-mesgs.
Perhaps my NEW Win8.1 thing is defective?

chris glur composed on 2016-09-17 08:16 (UTC):

After my linux sytem was stolen, and the inet-connection needed
Microsoft-compatible compatability, I was forced to buy a M$
laptop. The frustrating thing is Win8.1 64-bit;

But eg.
  https://sourceforge.net/directory/%3Fq%3Dmidnight%2Bcommander%2B64/
shows:
  Connecting to sourceforge.net (sourceforge.net)|216.34.181.60|
:443... connected.
HTTP request sent, awaiting response... 404 Not Found

I get 404 too.

  and
http://www.download3k.com/Install-Midnight-Commander.html
mentions only Win7 for 64 bit.

I'd not expect different binaries for W7 and W8.1.

How else can I get mc-like facilities, when being forced to
use this cartoon-based thing to make inet-connection, in my
3rd-world location?!

MC is an OFM, a class of several similar apps:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OFM

On OS/2 and Windows I use only File Commander:
http://silk.apana.org.au/fc.html

On Linux I use FC and MC. Each has strengths not shared by the other.
Visually they are little different. It's hard to do without either on Linux.
