Position Summary

The Digital Library and Information Systems Team (DLIST) at the
University of Arizona Libraries is part of a dynamic, team-based learning organization dedicated to a customer centered philosophy. We work in an environment of shared authority, responsibility and decision-making and believe in a diverse group of colleagues supporting the learning and research environment at a comprehensive research university.

DLIST provides vision and direction related to digital library initiatives and other library information systems. In collaboration with other library teams, DLIST creates and maintains the technical infrastructure for the Libraries including the
Information Commons and Center for Creative Photography. DLIST supports existing systems and technologies while developing and introducing new technologies to facilitate learning and research, encourage learner self-sufficiency and improve access to electronic information. Currently, DLIST is comprised of two work teams. One work team is responsible for the network, servers, desktop computers and other network-connected devices. The other work team is responsible for designing, developing, implementing, integrating and maintaining the core applications and services to support all digital library and library support functions.

The incumbent in this position provides and promotes vision and leadership for DLIST and the Library in all areas of technology related to digital libraries and information systems. This person will provide leadership in identifying, planning, implementing and evaluating information technologies, including the library's computing infrastructure, operating systems, hardware and software, to support information technology goals for the Library and the campus. This position represents the Libraries in collaborative campus and community (local, state and national) activities concerning computing and information systems and interacts with college and central computing leadership representing the Libraries. The incumbent in this position is a member of Cabinet, the administrative leadership team for the Univeristy of Arizona Library system, and will participate in library-wide cross-functional projects as well as in campus-wide activities.  

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Understands and communicates the Library's mission, vision, values and goals. While conveying the larger context in which the Library operates, exhibits personal commitment and takes leadership in creating team commitment to achieving goals. Leads team in translating library and team strategic goals into action.

2. Represents the University Libraries in campus IT forums and in regional and national consortia.

3. Promotes team commitment to a customer focus.

4. Works proactively and constructively to identify, define and solve problems within their own team and between teams and other individuals. Works with team members to develop coaching mechanisms to help individual team members who are having performance problems.

5. Facilitates and involves all team members in team planning, objective-setting and problem solving, empowering and holding team members accountable for participation and results.

6. Works with team members to define team and Team Leader roles and appropriate methodology for decision-making. Seeks and utilizes data and objective criteria for decision-making. Helps team recognize options and consequences of team decisions. Has final accountability for seeing that decisions get made and that there is appropriate follow-through.

7. Fosters an environment that encourages risk-taking and creativity.

8. Works proactively and constructively to develop and coach team members to be self-motivated; ensures professional, career, and skill development; ensures structure is in place for all team members to participate in the coaching and development of all staff.

9. Communicates and leads development of team understanding and support of library-wide decisions and priorities; helps the team communicate and create understanding of team issues library-wide.

10. Helps promote and support diversity within the team and the Library.

11. Works with the team to build self-managing capabilities, including effective delegation to sub-teams and individuals.

12. Champions cross-functional efforts to improve quality, service, and productivity.

13. Anticipates and responds to changes in the environment to help the Library move forward.

14. Leads in management of budgets; fosters understanding of and responses to internal and external funding opportunities and constraints.  

Additional Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited institution, management information systems, or other relevant field.

At least 5 years of related professional work experience in an academic setting or other research environment.

Assignment to a continuing-eligible or year-to-year appointment will depend on the relevant degree of the successful candidate. Only applicants with an MLS degree and a record of achievement which would allow appointment at the Associate Librarian level can be continuing-eligible.  

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to lead and manage an information technology program that has accomplished the strategic and operational goals of a research and/or large library organization.

Significant experience working with information technologies in areas such as the design of an enterprise-wide architecture, application development, knowledge/data management, network systems and services, user support and desktop services, web systems and services, user interface design, hardware and software engineering, and IT security.

Demonstrated success to lead and manage a highly technical, diverse team.

Ability to communicate in writing and convey information or ideas clearly or persuasively in a variety of contexts and to audiences with a range of technical knowledge.

Excellent collaborative and analytical skills.

Demonstrated commitment to a culturally diverse learning environment.

Knowledge of trends in higher education and learning.

Ability to work with diverse people in a team-based organization with openness and responsiveness to a changing environment.
