Here at SFMOMA we are reexamining our online style guide in tandem with a reconsideration of the types of object-related information we can or should directly export into our web content management system from our collections management system. (This is what we have been doing, but - for some types of information -- it requires a fairly onerous process of creating parallel fields for and/or adding HTML mark-up to control the presentation of the texts that are stored there.)
Up to this point we have maintained a close relationship between print and online publishing in terms of how we format artwork titles, exhibition titles, and bibliographic information (staying fairly close to the Chicago Manual of Style). But we have noticed a number of institutions are now publishing online without adhering to these styles for things like bibliographies and exhibition histories (e.g. not using italics for certain titles), perhaps for the same reasons we outlined above. So we are wondering if any of our colleagues have officially adopted a plain text online style guide for their site? And if so, would you be willing to share?
