The Museum Computer Network's California Special Interest Group (MCN CAL
SIG) announces its next meeting on Thursday,
June 24th in San Francisco.  

 

PROGRAM AND VENUE CHANGE FOR CAL SIG MEETING --JUNE 24--
Due to circumstances beyond our control, the MCN CAL SIG meeting’s morning session will not be held at the Asian Art Museum.  Instead, our morning program will change and we’ll be meeting at the newly opened (May 1st) California Academy of Sciences, at 875 Howard Street.

There is no charge for the program, however attendees MUST be current MCN members, current VRA members, or work for an institutional member of MCN or VRA. Where:
Meet at the California Academy of Sciences, 875 Howard Street, between Fourth and Fifth Streets.  Come to the main entrance and check in at the guard’s station.  The guards will have your name, and will direct you to the meeting room.

When and What:
9:00 am  
Call to order, announcements, introductions/progress updates or current issues from members. Coffee will be generously provided by the California Academy of Sciences.
 

10:30 am Tour of the
Naturalist Center with Diane Sands, Naturalist Center Coordinator.

11:00 am Stan Blum, Research Information Manager, Executive Committee Chair, Taxonomic Databases Working Group; and GBIF Subcommittee Chair, Data Access and Database Interoperability; will discuss Integrating Biodiversity Information on a Global Scale.
 
11:30 am Carrie Burroughs, Image Management Librarian,
will discuss the Academy’s image management systems, especially with regard to internal and public clients.
 
12:00 pm
 Lunch on your own.  You may stay at the Academy and eat at the Grow CafŽ, or you may go ahead to SFMOMA and eat at CafŽ Museo, or in the neighborhood between the two institutions. Or bring your lunch and eat in Yerba Buena Gardens. Restaurant lists will be provided.

Walk along Howard
past the Moscone Center to Third Street, turn left and proceed to SFMOMA. Turn right at Minna (just beyond the Museum) and walk to the parking area outside the Visitor/Staff entrance.  

1:00 pm
Meet outside SFMOMA's staff entrance (on Minna between New Montgomery &  Third Street).  

You'll be escorted to the SFMOMA office annex for our afternoon meeting with featured speaker, Robert Futernick, Associate Director of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Some of you may remember Bob's talk several years ago when he gave us a tour of their interim collections facility.  This time he'll be bringing us up to date on the new museum building in Golden Gate Park, and their latest technology plans.

Cookie break

3:00 pm
Cross Minna to the main museum building and go up to SFMOMA’s Koret Visitor Education Center for a tour of the facility and their technology.  Nora Nirk, KVEC Site Supervisor, will give us an overview. Peter Samis, Associate Curator of Education and Program Manager, Interactive Educational Technologies; will take over, discussing IET’s latest multi-media features for sfmoma.org, and introduce Pachyderm, the web authoring tool created by SFMOMA, now expanding through the Pachyderm Consortium.Ê How many elephants can fit into the SFMOMA?

5:00 pm Meeting adjourns, but you may visit the galleries until 9 pm, eat dinner in the cafŽ, or stay in the KVEC (open until 8:30 pm).  Bring your laptop to the cafŽ if you wish to check your email via wireless connection.
