[MCN-L] Creative Commons

2007-07-08 Thread Amalyah Keshet
Is anyone out there using Creative Commons licenses for museum or archive
images?

If so, which version(s) of the licenses are you using?

And are you finding it to be useful?

Many thanks for anything you might be willing to share on this subject.

[MCN-L] RFID Technology vs UPC Scanner

2007-07-08 Thread Ned Zimmerman-Bence
Hello,

If you have experience using RFID technology or UPC scanners in
exhibits or classroom activities, I could certainly use your help.
I'm working up a proposal for a classroom activity on solid waste
that would link either system to a database. Kids will be given a
bag of garbage items and then work with a database to sort the items
into the appropriate disposal categories: recycle, compost, e-waste/
universal hazardous waste, and landfill. I think using either system
would greatly simplify the activity as kids would just have to simply
scan or, in the case of the RFID chips, place the items in the
appropriate bin to get feedback from the database.

I'm currently leaning toward using a UPC scanner system because I
believe it would be easier for the center's staff to periodically
update the activity with new items.

What are the benefits or tradeoffs to each system?
How technically challenging is it to program RFID chips?
How have these systems been used in exhibits or classroom activities?

Any information you have would be really helpful.

Thank you,
Ned Zimmerman-Bence

I've been doing some training about open content/cc licenses for nonprofits
and I'm also a contributor over at icommons.org on nonprofits and cc.

I have some resources and examples (not museums) here:

[MCN-L] Museums on Facebook? Examples?

2007-07-08 Thread stuc...@fas.harvard.edu
Hi Beth,
I started a Museums on FaceBook group a few months ago and much to my surprise
there were probably 15 or 20 museums the group. The problem with FaceBook is
that they don't allow organizational memberships. FaceBook found Museums on
FaceBook and deleted the group and accounts in it that were
museums/organizations. I talked with FaceBook and they do not seem very
interested in changing the policy. They only want individual (faces) as
members.
We had a lot of interest from people on FaceBook and many signed-up as friends.
So it raises a point that it could be possible to create a Museum Group with
individuals representing a museum rather than organizations as members.
I hope this helps,
