[MCN-L] Distance Learning Programs
MCNers - I'm looking for the best examples of Distance Learning programs done by Museums, and would appreciate any examples you might be able to provide. I'm aware of efforts by the Cleveland Museum of Art, and would be looking for similar examples where the distance learning programs are ongoing, using telepresence (or similar) technologies, interactive in nature, and specifically ones that are not grant-funded or one-up attempts, but have a business plan and are (gasp.) profitable? Thanks in advance! : ) Marc E. Check Director of Information and Interactive Technologies Museum of Science Science Park Boston, MA 02114 617-589-4279 (office) 585-755-8622 (mobile) **
[MCN-L] Analog tape to digital conversion services
Hi Chuck and all, In addition to the great resources Deb has suggested, two other leads: The Association of Recorded Sound Collections, ARSC, has institutional members who do audio A-to-D in-house but occasionally outsource those services, and other members who provide those services as vendors. ARSC has an active email list, which it may be worth hitting with a query seeking off-list replies about prospective service providers. More at: http://www.arsc-audio.org/arsclist.html One lead to an audio digitization house: Sonicraft (sonicraft.com) does very high-quality transfers of music recordings. This recommendation is based on individual experience, not museum-related work. As we know, a key factor in whether any given shop is a good candidate for a project is the eternal tradeoff between transfer quality and cost, vis-?-vis the amount and type of source material, how much quality matters, and budget. Please ask me off-list if you'd like a lead to someone who may have ideas for a specific project. As a LinkedIn user, you might also see if you happen to have connections in the Audio Engineering Society (aes.org) via http://www.linkedin.com/groups?viewMembers=gid=71239 . Re: storage media, in a word: yes, once audio is digital, physical storage-medium aspects of preserving it are like those of preserving other digital files. Re: metadata, the AES has developed some relevant standards, and LOC digital preservation pages may be useful re: what can be embedded in audio files of a specified format (e.g., WAV): http://www.aes.org/publications/standards/ http://www.digitalpreservation.gov/formats/fdd/fdd01.shtml hope this helps! Has anyone used such a service that they could recommend? A couple of related questions - are there digital storage media for audio considered remotely archival? Or is it similar to visual data that's best kept on spinning disk and migrated in perpetuity? What types of meta-data can one ask a service provider of this sort to embed in the files?
[MCN-L] Distance Learning Programs
While this isn't my department, I can attest to the success of our distance learning programs, which are booking more and more classes for school children each year. Even after the recession hit, we still saw increases in IVC program sales, I believe, due to cut-backs in field trips --IVC programs are cheaper. Our Education Department utilizes 3 IVC (internet video conferencing) studios, 2 of which are outfitted with green/blue screen technology for chroma-keying. We use Polycom HDX 8000 series systems equipped with Polycom 1080p EagleEye cameras. [MCN-L] Results: Digital Asset Management (DAM) Planning/Implementation Survey
Colleagues, Apologizes for any cross-postings. The results from our August 2010 survey on DAM systems and planning are now up at http://digitalcommons.uconn.edu/libr_pubs/24/. We received some really thoughtful and helpful material that we had promised to share. Thanks so much to all who took the time to respond to the survey. Michael = Michael J. Bennett Digital Projects Librarian Institutional Repository Coordinator University of Connecticut Homer Babbidge Library 369 Fairfield Way, U2005-P Storrs, CT 06269 860-486-5276 860-486-6017 fax http://digitalcollections.uconn.edu/ = From: Michael J. Bennett Sent: Monday, August 02, 2010 2:50 PM To: diglib at infoserv.inist.fr; digipres at ala.org; IMAGELIB at LISTSERV.ARIZONA.EDU Subject: Digital Asset Management (DAM) Planning/Implementation Survey Colleagues, Apologies for any cross-postings. Here at UConn we are currently in the process of reviewing the current landscape with regard to overall DAM system offerings, the services that they provide vs. perceived local needs, expectations with regard to their implementation, etc . As part of this local review, we are also interested in getting feedback from people in the larger cultural heritage community who have perhaps either travelled this road before us and already have a system in place or who are similarly in our shoes and have just begun to strategize. With our own ongoing digital asset creation at UConn, we feel that it is time to more clearly consider the better overall administrative management of such broadening content in a more automated and consolidated manner. Hence we've initiated an initial investigation and online survey that we invite you to participate in: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/HDG9M2Z (Estimated time to complete: approx. 15-20 minutes) The survey will remain open until August 31, 2010. We will post results via a report uploaded to our institutional repository, http://digitalcommons.uconn.edu/. Please note that in our report, personal information from the survey will not be revealed, and any comments used will remain unattributed. Feel free to forward the survey link to other relevant constituencies. Thank you, Michael = Michael J.
