ARCS is pleased to announce the East Coast iteration of the ARCS Workshop:
Photo Synthesis: What You Need to Know About Photographs

Description:
This one-day workshop, designed to address concerns of staff who care for
various types of photography collections, will cover identification and
description of photographs, copyright, framing and mounting, display,
storage, installation and packing.  Attend this workshop to strengthen your
knowledge of photographic registration and preventive conservation. A
buffet lunch is included.

News Flash from a Member
We are pleased to let everyone know that the White House has announced
President Obama’s intent to appoint ARCS member Dorit Straus to a key
administration post as a Member of the Cultural Property Advisory
Committee. One of seven appointees to various Boards and Committees, Dorit
is an Art and Insurance Advisor for Art and Insurance Advisory Services
Inc., a position she has held since 2013.

She was previously Vice President Worldwide Specialty Fine Art Manager for
Chubb & Son, where she held various management positions from 1982 to
2013.  She has been a Visiting Lecturer at the Association for Research
into Crimes Against Art since 2009 and was an Art Culture and Entertainment
Manager at ACE USA from 1998 to 2000.  She has also worked as a Curatorial
Researcher at the Jewish Museum from 1981 to 1982, an Assistant Collection
Manager at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography at Harvard
University from 1978 to 1981, and an Assistant Registrar at the Museum of
Contemporary Crafts from 1976 to 1978.  She serves on the Board of
Directors of AXA Art Americas Corporation, and the International Foundation
for Art Research.  Ms. Straus received a B.A. from The City University of
New York.

[MCN-L] Job opening: Museum Fine Art Photographer at Harvard Art Museums (part-time)

Hi all,

The Harvard Art Museums has a job opening for a fine art photographer. Join the 
ranks of the department of digital imaging and visual resources and be part of 
the team that creates the museums' art images. This role is all about the 
production of archival photographic documentation of objects in the collections 
(http://www.harvardartmuseums.org/collections) for use in publications, catalog 
records, and a variety of analogue and digital formats.

This is a 28 hour per week part-time position located at the Harvard Art 
Museums Somerville Research Facility in Somerville, Massachusetts.

Duties and Responsibilities

* Create still images that are compliant with current museum standards 
and that accurately represent the objects from all the museums' collections.

* Photograph gallery exhibits and installations for the museums' 
archive, analog and digital publications, and press releases.

* Work with the DIVR coordinator, curators, conservators, and other 
staff to prepare project plans and establish and set timetables to meet project 
deadlines.

* Independently and collaboratively create imaging workflows for 
maximum productivity.

* Maintain and develop skills in the use of professional digital 
capture systems, both hardware and software, according to current museum best 
practices.

* Test new equipment and technologies. Make recommendations on 
equipment purchases and repairs to keep studio updated and functioning.

* Maintain and/or oversee maintenance of studio and imaging equipment.

* Consult with conservators and curators to determine views, 
appropriate setup, and lighting for museum objects. Work with conservators, 
curators, and collections management staff to ensure safe handling of works of 
art.

* Process digital files to match original art objects, maintaining 
industry standards for color managed workflows. Conduct and/or supervise color 
correcting, retouching, and processing of raw digital files.

* Prepare Photoshop scripts to automate file processing and to develop 
efficient workflows tailored to specific projects.

* Provide technical guidance to other HAM staff and collaborate with 
colleagues at other institutions on the production of images.

* Produce written and visual documentation of studio projects and 
workflows as part of a shared resource of reference material.

* Other related photography duties will be assigned as necessary.


Basic Qualifications
BA in photography or related field required, MFA preferred; 5+ years' 
professional digital photography experience in a museum or library, or similar 
setting required. Recent portfolio of images relevant to the position required.
