Re: [MCN-L] Examples of internal rubrics for approving and prioritizing digital projects/initiatives

2019-09-16 Thread Carissa Dougherty
Dear Dana...

We don't have a formal rubric, but these are the evaluation criteria upon
which we base our Library's digitization projects:

   -

Use: How often are the physical objects requested/accessed? How useful
are these objects to our stated audiences?
   -

Condition: How fragile are these objects? How vulnerable are they to
   degradation?
   -

Coherence: Do these objects belong to a larger collection? If so, how
large is that collection and can it be reasonably separated out and
digitized to form a complete digital collection?
   -

Uniqueness: Can these objects be found/accessed elsewhere? Do other
libraries' collections fulfill general research / scholarship in the field?

   -

Physical limitations: Are these objects too large to fit on a flatbed
scanner? Are they heavy, awkward, or fragile? Are they housed in way that
   makes them difficult to digitize?

You can see that the first three criteria are "positive" -- that is,
answering yes to the questions means they are more likely candidates for
digitization. The last two are "negative" -- answering no would increase
their priority level.

Hope that helps!

[MCN-L] looking for MCN conference proposal co-conspirators!

2018-04-19 Thread Carissa Dougherty
Hello!

(I've also posted this on the Slack channel, so apologies for duplication!)

I wasn't able to attend MCN last year, but I'm looking to propose a session
(or two?) this year. Because I've shifted from art museum to tree museum,
I'm a bit out of the loop and would really love come co-conspirators for
session planning!

Here are the two concepts that I've been thinking most about:

*Museum staff are humans, too*: Technology / innovation / content projects
that have focused on museum STAFF as an audience. Several of the
initiatives I've led in the last few years (Learning Management System,
Digital Asset Management System, Intranet) really depended on input,
buy-in, and (ideally) excitement from staff as both users and promoters of
these projects. I've definitely had some successes and hard lessons learned
along the way; I wonder if anyone else would like to provide additional
perspectives.

*Where do I belong?:* challenges and success stories of people who have "in
between" positions like mine, whose roles serve to break down silos and
foster digital literacy across the institution. I don't have "digital" or
"technology" in my title, nor do I report to IT. But people come to me with
technology projects because they know that I'll bring in the right people
and evaluate technology from a more neutral perspective. I can't be the
only one who's in a role like this (can I?)... would love to hear more
about how other people have taken on liaison / linchpin roles like this.

Thanks in advance... looking forward to collaborating!

[MCN-L] anyone out there from a zoo or aquarium?

2015-09-10 Thread Carissa Dougherty
Hello, MCNers...

I was wondering if we had among our members anyone from zoos or aquariums?
I am looking for people to present with me at a public garden conference
(APGA) next year and would love a fresh perspective from outside of the
strictly botanic-garden community. Any leads would be greatly appreciated!

Best,
Carissa

[MCN-L] Calling all Chicago-area MCNers!

2015-09-07 Thread Carissa Dougherty
I am very excited to announce that the Morton Arboretum will be hosting one
of the basecamp sites for the ARIS Global Game Jam
<http://arisgames.org/ggj2015/> on *Friday, October 23rd... *and you are
all invited!

ARIS <http://arisgames.org/> is a user-friendly, open-source platform
created by an interdisciplinary team out of UW-Madison
<http://www.fielddaylab.org> for creating and playing mobile games, tours,
and interactive stories. Using GPS (and/or QR codes), ARIS players
experience a hybrid world of virtual interactive characters, items, and
media placed in physical space. The ARIS user community is active and
diverse, with projects coming out of museums, universities, grade schools,
and artist communities around the globe.

*Who should attend?*

Anyone interested in playful learning, digital storytelling, and
interactive environments. The intuitive platform makes it easy to learn the
basics, and advanced users can create incredibly sophisticated and complex
games. Come as a team from your institution, or join a team on-site on the
day of the event.

*What will we be doing?*

In short, creating location-based games! The game jam will run all day
(from about 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.); we will begin with a live feed to the
kick-off event at the main host site in Madison, Wisconsin and then move
right into an ARIS platform bootcamp. After that, you'll have plenty of
time to create and play--all in a beautiful outdoor setting.

*What will be provided?*

Our facilitators will give you all of the training and tools to get up and
running in ARIS. Snacks, lunch, and admission to the Arboretum will also be
provided. You may want to bring your own laptop and / or iOS device,
although we will have loaners on hand.

*What does it cost?*

Absolutely nothing.

*Interested in attending? *

Register here <http://goo.gl/forms/YVm2eiYTXP>.

*Have more questions?*

Contact me at cdougherty[at]mortonarb.org

I look forward to seeing you in October!

[MCN-L] Google+ as internal collaboration tool?

2014-12-18 Thread Carissa Dougherty
Hello, all...

I was wondering if any of you use (or have attempted to use) Google+ as a
collaboration tool within your institution. If you have, are there any
barriers that you encountered with the software itself? Any surprises
(pleasant or otherwise)? How well did your team members adapt to it?

I'll admit that I'm a Facebook rather than Google+ user in my personal
life, but I've done some research and it seems like Google+ has some
features that could make it work as an enterprise social
networking/collaboration tool. Plus, gMail and gDrive are pretty well
integrated into the digital culture here, so finding something that plays
nice with those two tools is ideal.

Sometimes I feel like I'm asking for too much from a single tool, and that
using a suite of tools might actually get the job done -- but I also want
participation to be as easy and as seamless as possible!

I welcome any advice!

Best, and happy holidays,
Carissa

Re: [MCN-L] Google+ as internal collaboration tool?

2014-12-18 Thread Carissa Dougherty
Thanks, Ari...

Yes, I can see how personal/work elements could get intermixed, and
potential security issues... Fortunately, I am actually thinking less
about document management and more about informal conversations and
idea-sharing. I've tried Google Classroom, but it is a bit too one-sided
(i.e., instructor/student relationship rather than peer/peer).

I'd love to hear more thoughts!

Hmm. You've probably already run into significant problems keeping personal
and enterprise docs separate in Google Docs. Imagine the joy of discovering
that the grant proposal you need is owned by the staffperson who left
months ago, who also seems to have dropped off the planet; and then subject
your internal collaboration to the same stress.

In theory, if you are using Google for Non-Profits (hard, given the lack of
support, but I've done it) and are very careful, this could be a neat
toolset--and it is certainly a neat outreach tool. But there are also
 issues.

Still, now I wonder. Who is actually using it for what? How is it working?
I'm hoping to launch some Google Hangout collaborations for a community
network later this month, but those collaborations will be between many
 individuals and organizations
