[MCN-L] Change your approach to teaching information literacy

2020-05-07 Thread Samantha Weald
Wikidata Summer Institute | June 2020 online | data.wikiedu.org

In their Civic Online Reasoning research over the past four years the
Stanford History Education Group (1) summarizes that "young people's
ability to reason about the information on the Internet can be summed up in
one word: bleak." Have you been looking for new tools to help change your
approach to teaching information literacy? Wikidata provides one
opportunity for educators to prepare students to enter an ever-changing
information landscape. We hope you'll join our next online training to
learn more about Wikidata's place in information literacy education.

“Wikidata is the linked data repository behind Wikipedia and it powers many
answers that smartphones could spit out. Being able to explain what that
meant helped equip my students with all sorts of skills to reflect on the
information landscapes that they consume without thinking” writes Rivka
Genesen recent Wikidata training participant and Assistant Director of
Library Services at The Ursuline School (2).

By having a better understanding of linked data, research librarians will
be better positioned to support questions from students and professors
alike. Wikidata's powerful query service can reveal insights that may be
harder to find or are not present on academic databases or Google search
results. Our Wikidata Summer Institute invites you to start these important
conversations with your students. Other course outcomes include drawing
more research insights from data, learning about tools to help navigate
Wikidata, and more.

“Just like school librarians strive to support teachers and students with
their expertise and research assistance, Wikidata supports Wikipedia (and
the internet at large) by structuring data to make it both human and
machine readable. This deeper understanding of how information is organized
and created will help librarians better support their communities as they
consume information.”

We hope you'll join us! Sign up at data.wikiedu.org.

Best,

Samantha

[MCN-L] Execute digital projects from home with online Wikidata courses {plus, financial aid ends Friday}

2020-04-08 Thread Samantha Weald
April 15 - May 20, 2020 | Elevate your Collection | Wednesdays at 9am PST

Hi everyone, I hope this email finds you well as you adjust to quickly
changing work demands right now. If you're looking for virtual projects and
networking opportunities during this difficult time, please know that our
metadata management courses around Wikidata provide GLAM institutions with
a concrete way to execute digital projects from home. Our tried and tested
online training infrastructure has helped dozens of GLAM professionals
conceptualize projects with real institutional impact.

To support all registrants, we are offering group discounts and still have
5 seats eligible for financial aid for courses that start next week. Check
out our registration forms linked from data.wikiedu.org for more details
about our courses and our financial services. You may also email me at any
time with questions.

The Digital Collections team at Carnegie Hall, Lisa Barrier and Kathryn
Gronsbell, went into their Wikidata course expecting to receive an
introduction to editing (and maybe querying) but came out of it also with a
new understanding of how to interpret, share, and grow Carnegie Hall’s
archival collection and performance data.

“We understood that increasing our experience with and exposure to Wikidata
would help us plan for upcoming data projects. We can now work on
continuing alignment between Wikidata and Carnegie Hall’s performance
history data (CH-LOD) and create items for under-described or lesser known
entities (including performers, composers, and artists) who may not be
described in other datasets.” – Digital Collections Associate Lisa Barrier
and Digital Collections Manager Kathryn Gronsbell, Carnegie Hall.

Enroll at data.wikiedu.org to reserve your seat! Registration closes
Friday.

Hi Everyone,

At Wiki Education we're continuing to serve our community during the
COVID-19 pandemic. We know you're likely adjusting to a new routine of
working from home and may be looking for virtual projects and networking
opportunities, especially after upcoming conferences may have been
cancelled. With our tried and tested online training infrastructure, we

Does your GLAM institution have a special collection or focus you wish the
world knew more about? By sharing related institutional data on Wikidata, the
open data repository behind Wikipedia, you can use your institution’s
unique identifier to bring exposure to your data, drive traffic to your
website, and situate your institution as a leader with that collection. With
online meetings once a week via Zoom, Elevate your Collection will
give you one-on-one
coaching from our Wikidata experts, the chance to conceptualize online
projects for your institution, and a network of your peers cheering you on.

"Using Wikidata to enhance and build our oral history project's structured
knowledge base allows the collection to continue to be more utilized,
valued, and fulfill the project’s goals." - Jake Kubrin, Metadata Librarian
at the Stanford Law School Robert Crown Library*. *Read more*: *

[MCN-L] What happens when your attendees Google an artist in your collection?

2020-03-03 Thread Samantha Weald
April 14 - May 20, 2020 | Wikidata online training | data.wikiedu.org

Hi everyone, did you know that when a museum attendee Googles an artist in
your collection, or a library patron looks up an author from your stacks,
the panel that comes up on the right-hand side of those search results
usually pulls information from Wikidata, the open data repository behind
Wikipedia? Let our online Wikidata training courses teach you how to get
your institutions data online and into the hands of millions. Join a course
for beginners, or an advanced course for a more project-based approach.

“Wikidata will be one of the key architectures that link

the world's information together.”

Where “Wikipedia attracts people interested in writing prose, Wikidata
compels dot-connectors, puzzle-solvers, and completionists,” writes Richard
Cooke for Wired last month. And “of the 80 million items that have been
added to Wikidata so far, around half have been entered by human
volunteers” so your help is needed!

Our online training courses invite you to join this vast ecosystem of
knowledge while achieving long term goals for your institution. From Cooke:
"There are subprojects aiming to itemize every sitting politician on earth,
every painting in every public collection worldwide, and every gene in the
human genome into searchable, adaptable, and machine-readable form.” We'll
show you how to get your collections data online and into the hands of
millions.

Join us: visit data.wikiedu.org to read more and sign up! The next round of
courses start April 14th.

[MCN-L] What can an art museum learn from Wikidata?

2020-02-14 Thread Samantha Weald
Hi everyone, a little Valentine's Day treat for you! We've opened up our
financial aid applications for our upcoming Wikidata courses. More below!

What happens when a museum like the Art Institute of Chicago contributes to
one of the world’s largest linked data repositories? In our Wikidata
courses, we teach participants how "linked data allows for powerful queries
to reveal insights about artist gender breakdown, materials used,
exhibition information, and provenance of works. By having this data on
hand, museums can provide a fuller picture of their works and strive for
better representation within their collection."
Read more:
https://wikiedu.org/blog/2020/02/13/wikidata-at-the-art-institute-of-chicago/

Whether you work for a library, museum, or archive our online Wikidata
courses provide you with a direct chance to develop equitable and inclusive
data for your institution and the larger Wikidata ecosystem. Plus, we
have additional
financial aid available for our beginner and intermediate Wikidata courses.
So if your friends, colleagues, graduate students (or yourself!) would like
to participate but don't have access to professional development funds, I
encourage you to apply before next Fridays deadline! (Financial aid details
are available in the registration forms linked from each landing page
below.)

Join the Open Data Movement | Online | March 5 – April 9, 2020

curriculum that covers data ethics, metadata production, the advantages of
linked data, and an overview of Wikidata policies. Class meets Thursdays 10
– 11am PT / 1 – 2pm ET via Zoom.
