linked data environment.

The objective of the conference is to explore issues in managing
classification vocabulary in and between information systems. Particular
emphasis will be on the possibilities for exploiting and sharing subject
authority data in the linked data environment.

Speakers include Michael Buckland, Barbara Tillett, Dagobert Soergel,
Rebecca Green, Maja Žumer & Marcia Zeng, Nuno Freire, Maria Inês
Cordeiro, Andrea Scharnhorst & Richard Smiraglia, Wolfram Sperber,

--- REGISTRATION CLOSES on 15 October ---

Classification and Visualization: Interfaces to Knowledge International UDC
Seminar 2013
- will take place on Thursday 24 - Friday 25 October in the National Library of
the Netherlands, The Hague

The 2013 Seminar addresses the issue of visualization, which is at the heart of
the information discovery problem and an issue of concern
for all knowledge classifications.

The selection of 20 presentations captures the width and depth of problems that
are shared between two seemingly distant research specializations:
classification and visualization.

By covering diverse visualization topics such as solutions for browsing
classifications on tablet computers, building visualizations that can exploit
classification as linked data and the theoretical foundations of
visualization in information science - the conference programme seems to be a
true representation of research interests at this very moment.

The conference programme features many eminent speakers. Read more at:
http://seminar.udcc.org/2013/programme.php

Registration closes on 15 October 2013:
EUR 220 regular fee, students EUR 180

Registration fee covers lunches, refreshments, reception and the conference
proceedings book (published by Ergon)

The difference between bibliographic knowledge classifications and ontologies
resides in
their particular purpose/function, and levels of formality. However, they are
both based on observation and reasoning (ontological analysis) and share some
structural principles and elements.

The objective of this conference is to promote collaboration and exchange of

hope to learn more about methods in ontology modelling and whether these may be
used to improve and formalise the data models of bibliographic classifications
and enhance their value in information discovery.

Papers are now invited covering the following topics:

1. Modelling and representation of knowledge classifications
2. Standards and solutions for innovative and high-quality classification data
processing
3. Applications and implementations of classification structures as ontologies
4.Theoretical considerations of the role of knowledge classifications

The proposals should be of interest to academic and research communities dealing
with conceptual modelling, information systems design, knowledge organization,
knowledge engineering, semantic interoperability and information integration,
and
natural-language processing. Read more and download the full text of the CFP at

[MCN-L] PLACES STILL AVAILABLE: New technologies for Cultural Heritage - London, Wednesday, 9th June 2010

2010-06-05 Thread Aida Slavic
=PLACES STILL AVAILABLE =

We would like to remind you of the following ISKO UK afternoon event:
SEEING IS BELIEVING: NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE

DATE: Wednesday 9 June 2010, 13.30-19.00
VENUE: University College London
FEE: ? 20 (ISKO members and students FREE)
BOOKING: http://www.iskouk.org/cultural_heritage_jun2010.htm

Access to cultural heritage collections and information is a hot topic
with the public and even with some politicians. Information
professionals in museums, galleries and libraries, including managers of
virtual collections on the Internet, now have the opportunity (as well
as the obligation) to harness technology and bring our cultural assets
to the people. Conversely, opportunities are expanding for the public to
participate in curation through tagging, crowdsourcing and contribution
of their own content.

David Arnold, Andy Hudson-Smith, Melissa Terras and Fiona Romeo will
talk about current research on 3D documentation, work with texts,
archives, objects and museum collections. Speakers will address both
theoretical and implementation standpoints and will look at a variety of
approaches to the material including Web 2.0 solutions. Sascha Curzon
from Gallery Systems will give a short presentation about their eMuseum
Network project.

This ISKO UK open meeting is organized in cooperation with the UCL
Department for Information Studies and refreshments are kindly sponsored
by Gallery Systems.

To read more about the programme and to book your place go to the event
page http://www.iskouk.org/cultural_heritage_jun2010.htm.

Good governance, accountability, transparency, freedom of information: noble
aims for our society but achieving them depends on keeping and being able to
find records of our dealings. Are we up to it? Do we have systems and software
clever enough and robust enough to cope with today's massive tide of data? Do we
need to move our own habits and practices up a gear?

To address these questions and the practical reality of today's challenges we
have a team of speakers, battle-hardened from long experience as consultants
and/or practitioners.
