[MCN-L] CFP: For Love of Money - The State of Museum Salaries
CALL FOR PAPERS: FOR LOVE OR MONEY - THE STATE OF MUSEUM SALARIES Edited by Dawn A Salerno, Mark S Gold and Kristina Durocher We invite international submissions for our forthcoming book, For Love or Money: The State of Museum Salaries, which we'll be publishing next year (2019). Proposals should be submitted by Monday 17 December 2018. Please feel free to forward this information to colleagues who may have a special interest in this important subject. A copy of the full Call for Papers may be viewed and downloaded from: http://bit.ly/FLoMMS The museum profession suffers from systemic under-compensation and pay inequality. This book will examine both the causes of this situation and its resulting effect on staff, institutions, and the profession. It will also propose strategies for remedying the problem. It will: * identify internal and external factors that suppress wages; * consider the impact of the present practices and paradigms on the field as a whole; * articulate the benefits that fair and equitable compensation would achieve; * develop solutions to address wage inequity with the goal of strengthening our institutions, allowing committed museum staff to advance in careers that are financially and personally rewarding. Many museum professionals feel under-appreciated, some to the point of leaving for positions outside of museums. The employers, led ultimately by museum boards or local government entities, are faced with the challenge of balancing a budget and, as a solution, often relegate staff salaries and salary increases to the lowest priority. The result is a field in which salaries for highly qualified people remain low, staff size is as lean as it can be to sustain basic services, and employees are asked to do more for less, leading to high rates of staff turnover and impairment of the ability to realise important goals of diversity. Staff departures and turnover cost museums in productivity, quality and morale. Yet the prioritisation of investment in the museum visitor, by way of quality museum programs and capital projects, is rarely questioned. But what if, in this environment of low salaries and high staff turnover, the quality of the museum experience was at risk, causing a downward spiral in attendance and revenue? The benefits of employee longevity, loyalty, and productivity are lost, and the goal of diversity becomes harder to achieve. SUBMISSIONS This publication will consist of essays which explore these issues by bringing together research, analysis, case studies, commentary, and advocacy from a range of perspectives. We particularly welcome submissions based on practical experience (successful or otherwise) of initiatives and plans to address salary and wage inequality issues. For issues of particular interest please see: http://bit.ly/FLoMMS SUBMITTING A PROPOSAL If you are interested in being considered as a contributor, please submit a proposal and a short biography (in Microsoft Word format). Proposals should be 500-700 words in length and biographies 100-300 words. Please include a working title for your proposed chapter. You can propose to submit a chapter, a case study, or a thought or advocacy piece. Chapters will be 4000-6000 words in length. Case studies will be 1000-2000 words. [MCN-L] Call for Papers: Feminism and Museums
CALL FOR PAPERS: FEMINISM AND MUSEUMS Edited by Dr Jenna Ashton We invite international submissions for our forthcoming book, Feminism and Museums: Intervention, Disruption and Change, which we'll be publishing next year (2017), to be edited by Dr Jenna Ashton (Manchester Metropolitan University). Proposals should be submitted by Monday 21 November 2016. Please feel free to forward this information to colleagues who may have a special interest. A copy of the full Call for Papers may be downloaded from: http://bit.ly/FemMus This year, feminist activists The Guerrilla Girls stage their latest exhibition (and first in the UK), showcasing a survey of 400 European galleries and revealing that museums still fail to reflect the full diversity of art activity and art history. The anonymous art collective’s methods of disruption range from site-specific protests and performances to research, publications, posters and billboards. All the while remaining anonymous in their gorilla masks. Many other feminist curatorial projects continue to challenge the exclusion or misrepresentation of women’s histories and cultural activities. As long ago as 1913, in the first disruptive feminist act, three suffragettes attacked a number of pictures in Manchester Art Gallery as part of the campaign for women’s votes. More recently, artists such as Judy Chicago have created activist pieces aiming to redress the absence of women’s creativity and cultural heritage in museums; while academics such as Linda Nochlin in her seminal essay “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” have analysed the sexual politics underpinning the exclusion of women from cultural canons. Feminism and Museums: Intervention, Disruption and Change will bring together case studies and analyses of recent feminist actions, interventions and disruptions which aim to directly impact and influence collecting, interpretation and engagement activities in museums, galleries and heritage organisations. PURPOSE The aims of the publication are: * To encourage and facilitate feminist practice by sharing examples of success and positive experience in the museum and heritage sector. * To evaluate the impact and results of feminist practices and actions in the museum and heritage sector. EDITOR Dr Jenna Ashton is Impact and Engagement Manager at Manchester Metropolitan University’s Office for Research and Knowledge Exchange, and Creative Director of the Digital Women’s Archive North [DWAN]. Her research and curatorial practice explores memory and narrative, material culture, archives and feminist interventions. SUBMISSIONS We welcome international proposals for both (longer) chapters and (briefer) case studies from museum, gallery and heritage professionals, academics and researchers. Proposals from those with practical experience of assessing and evaluating outcomes in this field are particularly welcome, as are contributions which present the practical experience of innovative programmes, or the results of the impact of new initiatives. Aspects of interest include – but are not limited to – innovations and successes in any of the following areas: * Curatorial and collecting decisions and initiatives * Positive innovations in the fields of management, marketing, interpretation, exhibitions, digital, outreach and other key aspects of museum and heritage work. * Successful changes to institutional structures, policies or practices * The discovery and presentation of hidden herstories * Positive engagement with voluntary or activist women's organisations * The impact of organisations founded or managed on a feminist ethos * Artist interventions SUBMITTING A PROPOSAL If you are interested in being considered as a contributor, please submit a proposal and a short biography (in Microsoft Word format). CALL FOR PAPERS MUSEUM PARTICIPATION: Engaging and Involving Audiences Editors: Kayte McSweeney and Jennifer Kavanagh We invite international submissions to be included in this forthcoming book to be published by MuseumsEtc [www.museumsetc.com]. For convenience, the full Call for Papers may be downloaded here: http://bit.ly/1Qpqv9B In the last decade increasing numbers of museums and galleries worldwide have developed collaborative ways of working with the public which could be called “participatory” or “co-creative” – seeking to involve both current and potential audiences which have diverse expertise, knowledge and perspectives. Since Nina Simon published her toolkit in 2010, the museum sector has continued to develop audience engagement methodologies, with exciting and varied results. Now, both larger and national museums and galleries are embracing this practice, previously dominated by more community-focused institutions. Museum Participation aims to capture the ways in which these large-scale (i.e. larger or national) museums and galleries are embracing this practice, highlighting successes and challenges, and reflecting on its impact. AIMS * To encourage and facilitate participatory methods of working in larger and national institutions by sharing examples of innovation, best practice, useful models and valuable experience. * To share the results of research, analysis and evaluation. * To explore the distinctive challenges which large-scale institutions face. * To investigate the impact of participation on working practices. * To reflect on the development of participatory practice in large-scale institutions. EDITORS Kayte McSweeney is currently Senior Audience Advocate and Researcher at the Science Museum, London and from mid-June will be the Object Journeys Partnership Manager at the British Museum. She is also co-chair of the Visitor Studies Group. Jen Kavanagh is Senior Curator of Contemporary History at the Museum of London. She was previously Audience Engagement Manager for the Information Age gallery at the Science Museum and Community Curator at the London Transport Museum. SUBMISSIONS We welcome international proposals for both (longer) chapters and (briefer) case studies from museum and gallery professionals, academics and researchers. Proposals from those with practical experience of assessing and evaluating outcomes in this field are particularly welcome, as are contributions which detail practical experience of innovative programmes, or which present the results of the impact of new initiatives. Submissions should address the work of institutions which face the issues of scale associated with larger-scale or national museums and galleries. [MCN-L] Twitter For Museums: Share Your Experience
We're seeking the input and advice of museum folks about a new book we're planning... There are books about how to use Twitter, but none about how best museums and galleries, large and small, can ? and are ? using Twitter to involve their very diverse communities. We hope our forthcoming book will remedy this. We see it as having two parts: How To Do It and Twitter In Use (Case Studies). We plan that the book will be available as a paperback, an eBook, and - importantly of course - have a linked site for updates between revised editions. An integral part of the development of the book is interaction with Twitter users throughout the world ? seeking your advice, experience, ideas ? and practical input ? to make Twitter for Museums a useful, exciting, stimulating resource. We'd really welcome your input at this stage on: What topics should the book cover? What are the key issues and questions museums using Twitter need to address? We?ve set out our initial thoughts below. If you'd like to question these, or add your own suggestions, you can do so here: http://www.museumsetc.com/?p=1330 ? Why use Twitter? ? Having a policy and being clear about your aims ? What benefits should you expect? ? What about the time involved? ? What about protecting the museum?s image and ?controlling? content? ? Who should tweet? ? Using multiple Twitter accounts ? Setting up Twitter: what to do and what not to do ? What to tweet about ? Useful third party applications ? Adding images, audio and video ? Linking Twitter to other social media platforms ? How best to involve your communities: local, national, international, children, researchers etc ? Museum Case Studies ? Useful resources If you?re interested in sharing your experience by contributing to Twitter for Museums and: ? writing one or more sections ? or (co)editing ? or writing an article/essay please let us know and we?ll send you more information. Thanks in advance for your input! And if you'd like to hear from us as the book takes shape, preview draft chapters etc, follow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/museumsetc Graeme Farnell MuseumsEtc
