[MCN-L] The Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF) announces the 2021 Spring Professional Development Grant Recipients

2021-03-01 Thread Kniesch, Jennifer
MARCH 1, 2021

The Board of Directors of the Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF) is
pleased to announce the Spring 2021 VRAF Professional Development Grant in the
amount of $500 to Brian Watson, a Doctoral Student at the University of British
Columbia’s School of Information, and $500 to Steffi Terasaki, the Curatorial
Assistant/Assistant Registrar at the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle.

Brian Watson plans to use the funds towards a
Certificate
in XML and RDF from the Library Juice Academy. These languages are necessary
to build compatibility between Homosaurus—an
international, community-maintained LGBTQ linked data vocabulary system
intended to function as a companion to broad subject term vocabularies, such as
the Getty or LCSH—and other major thesauri used in GLAMS cataloguing. After
completing the certificate, Brian plans to finish a complete mapping of
Homosaurus to LCSH and Getty, as well as expand the number of terms in
Homosaurus specifically connected to visual resource description. This work
would allow the vocabularies used in the GLAMS sector to more ethically and
inclusively represent intersectionality in their holdings, which would have the
additional benefit of making intersectional identities more visible within
cultural heritage institutions.

Steffi Terasaki wishes to gain a foundational knowledge in digital visual
resource management, including born digital material; become an active
participant in the museum and archives community around digital asset
management in order to learn from/collaborate with her colleagues; and gain
hands-on experience with managing a project through workshops. To accomplish
these goals, Steffi will use the grant funds to attend: the Society of American
Archivists Basics of Managing Digital Collections Online
course,
 the 2021 Visual Resource Association
conference, and the Summer Educational
Institute for Digital Stewardship of Visual
Information.

The VRAF Professional Development Grant Program reflects the broad mission of
the VRAF to support professional development in the field of visual resources
and visual information management. The grant can be used to participate in a
professional development opportunity of the grantee’s choosing (such as a
conference, symposium, workshop, online education), or to enroll in relevant
research activities (such as hands-on field work or a site visit for scholarly
purposes). For more information about the VRAF, the VRAF Professional
Development Grant, and other VRAF programs, please visit

[MCN-L] VRA Foundation Announces 2020-2021 Internship Award Recipient

2020-08-18 Thread Kniesch, Jennifer
The Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF)
Board of Directors announces the 2020-2021 VRAF Internship Award
 in visual resources and image
management. This award was generously funded by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.

Miriam Sappington, of Kailua, Hawaii, is the recipient of the VRA Foundation’s
Internship Award. She will receive $3,000 to work a minimum of 200 hours in the
Hamilton Library at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa. Miriam’s work will
focus on creating an online catalogue raisonné of Juliette May Fraser, a
talented and influential artist in Hawai’i during the early 20th century.
Prints and photographs from the artist will be scanned and linked to
appropriate metadata from the artist’s own records using catalog management
software, and then incorporated into an online image gallery. In this way
Miriam aims to facilitate accessibility between cultural collections and
community, bringing awareness to multiple narratives and cultivate a shared
connection to place.

The Foundation felt the internship was a perfect match for the exact stage of
Miriam’s professional journey. Recently accepted into the Library and
Information Sciences Graduate program, Miriam’s proposed project for the
University of Hawai’i at Manoa will be a valuable asset for scholars, most
especially when the difficulty of on site research is considered, as well an
invaluable opportunity for her to put to use key skills and practices
associated with the visual resources profession.

The Foundation is pleased to support the education and practical training of
emerging professionals through this internship award. This year the VRAF
Internship Award Committee received excellent applications for an array of
fascinating and important projects which made the selection process difficult.
The Internship Award Committee (Linda Callahan, Bonnie Rosenberg, Kristine
Clark, and Marcia Focht, Chair) appreciates the careful thought that went into
every proposal. We are grateful to the Kress Foundation for its assistance and
for recognizing the potential of this award to foster the next generation of
visual resource professionals.

The VRAF Internship Award is part of the Foundation’s mission to advance
awareness of important issues for effective digital information management
(including intellectual property and copyright); encourage the application of
professional standards, innovative technology, and metadata cataloging
protocols; and to facilitate workplace training. VRAF supports a range of
educational offerings to help ensure that such information reaches a diverse,
global audience. For more information about the Visual Resources Association
Foundation, its mission and projects, as well as giving opportunities, please
visit https://vrafoundation.org or read the latest issue of our annual
report.

[MCN-L] Reminder Call for applications: Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF) Internship Award, 2020-2021 Due July 24

Subject: Call for applications: Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF)
Internship Award, 2020-2021

*apologies for cross-posting*

The Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF)<https://vrafoundation.org/>
is pleased to invite applications for the eighth VRAF Internship
Award<https://vrafoundation.org/internship-award/> in visual resources and
image management. This internship is generously funded by the Samuel H. Kress
Foundation.

The VRAF Internship Award provides financial support for graduate students and
recent graduates preparing for a career in visual resources and image
management. The award grants $3,000 to support a period of internship in
archives, libraries, museums, visual resources collections in academic
institutions, or other appropriate contexts. It also provides $1,000 for
professional development, and a one-year complimentary student membership in
the Visual Resources Association<http://vraweb.org/>.

Candidates should apply after developing a project with a specific collection
and prospective supervisor. Priority will be given to applicants who submit
projects that support art historical or related visual cultural heritage
research and scholarship. The VRAF Internship Award Committee favors
opportunities in which the intern may integrate skills acquired during the
course of his or her academic training to manage a project from beginning to
end, with the host institution receiving needed help in making valuable but
hidden cultural collections visible. Projects that would not occur without
funding for an intern may be given special consideration. A complete
description of the internship and application instructions are available at:
https://vrafoundation.org/internship-award/.

In this unpredictable and unfamiliar time of COVID-19, it is clear that remote
work and research are dependent upon online collections. VRAF believes that
there are many learning opportunities for interns to help provide scholarly and
public access to collections by working remotely if needed in the 2020-2021
academic year.

Applications are due on July 24, 2020. The award recipient for 2020-2021 will
be announced on August 17, 2020.

Please forward this announcement to anyone who might be interested.

June 1, 2020

The Board of Directors of the Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF) is
pleased to present the 2020 VRAF Project
Grant in the amount of $3000
to Stephanie Becker, Digital Collections Manager and Project Manager for
Regionally Speaking: A Virtual
Symposium, at
Case Western University, Cleveland, OH.

Regionally Speaking: A Virtual Symposium project will create transcriptions and
time-based captions for A/V media files, in order to create needed
accessibility features for user inclusivity. The VRAF Project Grant will allow
Ms. Becker, and other project collaborators at Case Western's, Kelvin Smith
Library, to find, research and collaborate with a vendor, who will assist in
transcribing approximately 70 moving image and oral history files regarding the
community of Cleveland, Ohio. The text and/or captions will then be applied to
the files, and the Regionally Speaking collaborators will create and build a
framework for the audio and video files to be available with caption formatting
for easy and intuitive public viewing and downloading. The project will create
needed accessibility features for the public and provide a larger and more
accessible portal for the Cleveland, Ohio community.

In accordance with the VRAF Project Grant Program and VRAF mission to support
broad access to visual and cultural information, the VRAF is pleased to support
a project that extends dissemination of accessibility features and supports
inclusivity in collections, while also providing documentation about social
justice and cultural heritage.

[MCN-L] VRA Foundation Regional Workshop: Can We Do That? Intellectual Property Rights and Visual Media

2020-02-21 Thread Kniesch, Jennifer
*apologies for cross-posting*

The Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF) is pleased to announce that
Can We Do That? Intellectual Property Rights and Visual
Media
will be held on March 13, 2020 at Occidental College in Los Angeles, CA. Can
We Do That? Intellectual Property Rights and Visual Media is one of the four
workshops being offered in the fifth year of the VRAF Regional Workshop
Program. The VRA Foundation is grateful to the
Samuel H. Kress Foundation for their continued support of this exciting
opportunity to partner with cultural heritage and educational institutions.

How do I know whether something is protected by copyright? What is fair use and
how can I apply it? What copyright exceptions are available for library or
archival use? How can I clear a copyright? How do I navigate and negotiate
licensing agreements? If you’ve asked yourself these questions, this workshop
is for you! Aimed at providing real-world applications within the academic,
archival, library, gallery and museum environments, we will use relevant case
studies to explore issues such as educational and scholarly usage, securing
academic publication rights (including for online use), creative reuse, fair
use guidelines, VARA and moral rights, licensing from vendors and rights
holders, and the public domain. Participants will also be introduced to tools
and resources to help them and their constituents in making decisions regarding
appropriate use and dissemination of visual media.

Can We Do That? Intellectual Property Rights and Visual Media will be taught by
Cara Hirsch, Deputy General Counsel at The Virtual Reality Company, a studio
focused on the creation of content for virtual reality film and other
experiences. At VRC, Cara oversees all intellectual property matters relating
to the company's business. She is the former Associate General Counsel at the
Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, where she supported Guggenheim’s legal
affairs in a wide variety of areas including intellectual property. Prior to
the Guggenheim, Cara was Deputy General Counsel for Artstor, a nonprofit
organization whose mission is to use digital technology to enhance scholarship,
teaching, and learning in the arts, humanities and other fields. Among her
duties at Artstor, Cara collaborated in refining Artstor's intellectual
property and other legal strategies for the organization. She also supervised
the rights review and clearance process for media collections in the Artstor
Digital Library, a digital image resource that makes available to nonprofit
institutions over 1.7 million digital images in the arts, architecture,
humanities, and sciences. Cara also worked as an Associate at the law firms of
Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP and Andrews Kurth LLP, where she practiced in the
field of intellectual property. She served as Co-Chair of the Intellectual
Property Rights Committee of the Visual Resources Association from 2011-2014.
Cara received her J.D. from Fordham University School of Law and her B.A., with
distinction, from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.

Registration for Can We Do That? Intellectual Property Rights and Visual
Media
is open until February 28, 2020. The fee for the workshop is $125. For more
information about the workshop and to register, visit
here.
If you have any questions about registration, please feel free to contact Beth

at the University of Denver with instructor Anne Young, Head of Rights and
Reproductions, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Newfields.

March 13, 2020: Can We Do That?: Intellectual Property Rights and Visual Media
at Occidental College Library with instructor Cara Hirsch, Deputy Head of Legal
and Business Affairs at The Virtual Reality Company.

May 22, 2020: Collaborating Across the Institution: Creating Professional

California, Santa Barbara.

May 29, 2020: From Project to Product: Effective Project Management and
Strategic Planning at the University of Toronto Mississauga with instructor
Shyam Oberoi, Chief Digital Officer, Royal Ontario Museum.

In the 2019-20 season, we’re delighted to expand the Regional Workshop program
in two important ways. The host applications were open to international
institutions for the first time and we received several strong international
applications. The University of Toronto Mississauga will host the inaugural
international VRAF Regional Workshop with veteran instructor Shyam Oberoi’s new
project management and strategic planning workshop.

The “propose your own workshop” option was exercised by the University of
Denver in their host application. The Regional Workshop team has matched their
request with instructor Anne Young, who can delve into a deeper understanding
and utilization of Creative Commons licenses, RightsStatements.org, and
Traditional Knowledge labels with collection objects to expand existing
permissions practices at galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAMs).
Join us for the first workshop of the 2019-20 season on Nov. 22, Beyond
Licenses: Integrating Creative Commons, RightsStatements.org, and Traditional
Knowledge into Permissions
Practices.
 Register today to save

forward to the exciting developments of the 2019-20 season! This workshop
series reflects the VRAF mission to promote scholarship, research, education,

The Board of Directors of the Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF) is
pleased to present the Fall 2019 VRAF Professional Development Grant in the
amount of $1000 to Malkia Okech, Augmented Reality
Developer for the Penn & Slavery Project, Penn Libraries Digital Scholarship,

Malkia Okech, plans on utilizing the funds to participate and develop her
skills with a 4 day workshop with African Digital Heritage in Nairobi and
Kisumu, Kenya, Africa. She will be assisting in the planning, presenting and
collaborating on a workshop, "Creating Interactive Digital

Past recipients include Anne Young, Manager of Rights and Reproductions at the
Indianapolis Museum of Art, to attend the 2013 American Law Institute
Continuing Legal Education (ALI CLE) Legal Issues in Museum Administration
course. Her attendance was crucial in the production of Rights & Reproductions:
The Handbook for Cultural Institutions, an indispensable resource. About the
grant, Anne wrote, “The Grant funded a portion of my course tuition and
associated travel costs to attend the program. It is my belief that this Grant
was also a contributing factor to my receiving a partial-scholarship, half of
the course tuition, from ALI CLE that further supported my attendance… Without
my attendance at ALI CLE’s LIMA and the VRAF’s Grant support, I would not have
been able to make the vital connections to make the Handbook contributors and
legal review panelists as robust as they are today.” The Handbook is now
available and can be downloaded from the American Alliance of
Museums website.

Apologies for cross-posting

Greetings from the Visual Resources Association 2018 Philadelphia conference
local planning committee! We’d like to invite you to join us at the Loews
Philadelphia Hotel March 27-March 30 for workshops and sessions related to the

The Visual Resources Association supports professionals in
educational, cultural heritage, and commercial environments who create,
disseminate, preserve, and interpret visual and digital content. Our theme for
this year’s conference is “Workshop of the World” which speaks not only to the
industrial past of Philadelphia, but also the collaborative nature of the
profession.

Some workshops and sessions of interest might include:

Workshop 1: Basics of Photogrammetry—3D Visualization of Cultural Heritage
Objects
Workshop 2: Collaborative Digital Asset Management
Workshop 3: ARCGis Online & Storymaps
Workshop 7: Python for Beginners

Session: Beyond TIFFs and JPEGs: Best Practices and Asset Management for
Digital Files Beyond Still Images
Session: IIIF in Practice – Use Cases for Implementing and Using IIIF APIs
Session: The Law of Fair Use of Images, Video, and Music in Artistic
Appropriation

Museums and Higher Education
