Launch www.discoverislamicart.org

Dear Colleagues,

I am delighted to be able to inform you that Museum With No Frontiers (MWNF) launched its Virtual Museum Discover Islamic Art on 9 December 2005. This project has been realised with the support of the European Union under the Euromed Heritage programme.

42 museums from 14 countries of the European Union, North Africa and the Middle East - Algeria, Egypt, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Morocco, the Palestinian Authority, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey and the United Kingdom - are participating in this "Biggest Islamic art Museum of the World" (Der Tagesspiegel, 9 December 2005).

The Discover Islamic Art Virtual Museum includes a Permanent Collection (presenting 1,235 objects, monuments and archaeological sites from the 14 countries in Arabic, English and French), a Database*, a section dedicated to the Partner Museums as well as a Travel & Book platform. A Temporary Exhibition space will be inaugurated in spring 2007.

Visitors to the website can now follow the Exhibition Trails launched by MWNF in nine countries around the Mediterranean through 81 thematic itineraries presenting Islamic art and architecture from the Umayyad period until the Ottomans.

We look very much forward to your visit and please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any further queries.

Mehmet Kahyaoglu

Art Historian, M.A.

Assistant to Head of the Project

* Please note that some of the translations are still in progress; from September 2006 all descriptions as well as the Database will be available in the three afore-mentioned languages as well as in the local language of each country.

Where could I simply view the MCN discussion forum? I'm a student writing a paper about the methods of online communication for museums, and I just want
to read some of the forum.
