[MCN-L] Creative Commons and Embedding metadata into images
Hi Marianne, I head the Visual Resources Embedded Metadata working group (http://metadatadeluxe.pbworks.com ). We have done a lot of research and built a lot of tools for embedding information about cultural heritage images. One thing to consider is what fields you will use based on how you expect users to access the data. There are a core set of fields read by most software and then there are specialized fields used for ingest into granular schemas, like VRA Core. Take a look at our Basic embedded metadata for photos of art and architecture http://metadatadeluxe.pbworks.com/w/page/59200201/Basic%20artwork%20metadata%20guidelines You can read about the VRA custom info Panel at: http://metadatadeluxe.pbworks.com/w/page/32300275/VRA%20XMP%20Info%20Panel%20(beta) The VRA panel does include Creative Commons fields in the Image section, but the rest of the panel might be more granular than you need. If so, you can hide the fields you don't need in the customization screen. For batch importing, we have an export/import plugin for Bridge: http://metadatadeluxe.pbworks.com/w/page/48025141/VRA%20Panel%20Export-Import%20Tool It works with tab-delimited text files which you can edit in Excel. Again, it has a lot of columns you may not need to import, but you can just leave them blank and use the columns that fit your need. Feel free to contact me for help. [MCN-L] Embedded metadata/image importer for PowerPoint 2010
I want to share news about MetaShotPpt, a tool that takes a folder of image files with embedded descriptive metadata and imports them into a new PowerPoint presentation. Each image is placed in a single slide and if the file has embedded metadata, it is imported to the speaker notes. MetaShotppt is meant to streamline the creation of PowerPoint presentation for faculty and students. This first version works on Windows PowerPoint 2010 and newer. http://metadatadeluxe.pbworks.com/w/page/65714041/MetaShotPpt MetaShotPpt is a project of the Visual Resources Association Embedded Metadata working group who are working on establishing standards and tools for using embedded image metadata in images of cultural heritage works. Our other projects include a custom XMP info panelhttp://metadatadeluxe.pbworks.com/w/page/32300275/VRA%20XMP%20Info%20Panel%20(beta) using the VRA Core schema and a metadata export-import plugin for Bridge.http://metadatadeluxe.pbworks.com/w/page/48025141/VRA%20Panel%20Export-Import%20Tool I would be happy to share the MetaShotPpt source code with anyone who wants it. Of course, we would welcome any help in improving it. [MCN-L] metadata exports and Flickr apis and tools
Hi, I am a member of the Visual Resources Association and co-chair of the Embedded Metadata subcommittee. Here are a few other embedded metadata extraction tools you might find useful: ExifTool (complete reader/editor for EXIF, IPTC, and XMP) http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/%7Ephil/exiftool/ -ExifToolGUI (Windows GUI) Used with ExifTool, this is the best free metadata viewer I have found. It also allows you to import and export embedded metadata in a single image or in batches http://freeweb.siol.net/hrastni3/foto/exif/exiftoolgui.htm Exiv2 - Image metadata library and tools http://www.exiv2.org/index.html XnView (utility for viewing and converting graphic files) http://pagesperso-orange.fr/pierre.g/xnview/enhome.html Exempi - Open Source library for manipulating XMP, built on the Adobe XMP SDK http://libopenraw.freedesktop.org/wiki/Exempi FileMind is a very interesting application for managing embedded metadata. This looks like a very promising tool for curators to manage metadata submitted by users as well as embedding metadata before sharing or publishing image files. http://www.metabilitysoftware.com/ For a very interesting project that uses linked data to combine results from DBpedia and Flickr, check out Flickr Wrappr http://www4.wiwiss.fu-berlin.de/flickrwrappr/ You can find also find lot of information on the Visual Resources Association project wiki for embedded metadata. http://metadatadeluxe.pbworks.com/ Project - http://metadatadeluxe.pbworks.com/VRA-Embedded-Metadata-Subcommittee Background info - http://metadatadeluxe.pbworks.com/Basics-and-a-History Case studies - http://metadatadeluxe.pbworks.com/Case-Studies Thanks Greg Reser Arts Library, Geisel Library Building 9500 Gilman Drive, 0175Q La Jolla, CA 92093-0175 858 246-0998 greser at ucsd.edu -Original Message- From: mcn-l-bounces at mcn.edu [mailto:mcn-l-boun...@mcn.edu] On Behalf Of mcn-l-request at mcn.edu Sent: Saturday, January 10, 1970 12:00 PM To: mcn-l at mcn.edu Subject: mcn-l Digest, Vol 54, Issue 10 Send mcn-l mailing list submissions to mcn-l at mcn.edu To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://toronto.mediatrope.com/mailman/listinfo/mcn-l or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to mcn-l-request at mcn.edu You can reach the person managing the list at mcn-l-owner at mcn.edu When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than Re: Contents of mcn-l digest... I just wanted to add that as far as photography is concerned and Digital Asset Management (DAM) their are a number of options. Metadata comes in several forms EXIF and XMP, which one of these internationally or in the US you choose to use will have to be decided based on your institution and the associations that will be requesting your files. Their are several editing applications that are available some that are free and some that are part of DAM software packages, photo editing software and the like. I have attached a link to some of the generic editing applications that are available and other information that you may find helpful. This is not the end all list, if I were researching with more specific information I would supply a short list for you. I have used several types and methods for editing Metadata as well as setting up a DAM server based systems and I would tell you that their are any number of ways to approach metadata management and in the short term you can use an application editor along with a iphoto type program but what you really need to address is the quantity of images you will be managing. I was managing 56,000 with an additional 2000 images a month and at that level you can get really confused and frustrated by not having a proper system set up. Additionally their are issues of compatibility especially if their is any type of information exchange.
