M'Learned Colleagues,

At MCN 2012 in Seattle, as part of Friday morning's Slack Day extravaganza,
there will be a session codenamed Hackin' Shack. This session will consist of
several bite-size introductions to cool tools and technologies which perhaps
you've been meaning to try but never had the time or opportunity.

We're seeking brave volunteers who are willing to give a 15 minute live
demonstration of a piece of software, hardware or a technique that makes your
museum tick. Ideally, software should be freely available?at least a free
demo?such that participants can install in advance and hack along with your
show. Nothing like getting your hands on to learn something.

Here's an incomplete list of the kind of stuff we can imagine finding an eager
audience:

node.js, ruby, Processing(.js), Sketchup and 3D modelling, editing a Wikipedia
page, web services, cloud, Firebug, multiplayer tactics in Halo, "I want an
app", dungeon raiding in World of Warcraft, productivity tips, making ebooks,
RDFa, Max/MSP/Jitter, accessibility, HTML5 forms/canvas/etc., CSS3 eye candy,
LESS, SASS, or WHATEVER is floating your boat right now.

The general ethos is that of a drop-in, drop-out, optional participation
session?this is a Slack Day, after all. Demos should focus on a generic
introduction to the tool rather than a case study. Participants may drift
between this and other exciting Slack Day tracks, such as hardware hacking and
THATCamp. Keeping an irreverent, informal tone, these sessions could be an
opportunity for MCN "emerging professionals" to try their hand at presenting or
for seasoned MCN members to pass on their hard-won knowledge.

If you have an idea for a session, please drop me a line at r.barrettsmall at
vam.ac.uk. Once we have a critical mass of contributors, I'll put together a
running order and try to orchestrate some kind of online conflab, like Google
Hangout.

Thanks for your time and I look forward to seeing you in November, if not
before.

Best regards,

--
