Re: [MCN-L] Digital Signage options

2015-12-15 Thread Lavatelli, Anna C.
For video throughout the museum Brightsign is used here, but for signage I
have been working with a product called Navori (I also used it back in San
Diego). The software works with any type of windows/android PC or their
out of the box players. In both instances I have used it with a local
server install of the software as opposed to their cloud-based service. It
is nice for scheduling and depending on what type of machine is running
the player it can handle a good amount of video content running 24/7. It
is one of the more affordable signage CMS options I could find that is
scalable to handle a variety of players, screen resolutions, and content
types (from webpages to videos, and can all be templated together in one
screen). It is easy to train staff once you get used to the little UI
quirks, of course it is a user-friendly web-based silverlight gooey so it
can be annoying at times. Additionally the notifications are solid, you¹ll
know if something has been turned off, or see if a player is offline (not
receiving updates) and you can schedule down to the second months in
advance which is great, and web access (via VPN) so I can check on it from
anywhere. The updates can be a little clunky, but in favor of being able
to quickly and easily update content we are pretty happy with it.

Best,
Anna

If offering Deaf or hard of hearing visitors the ability to activate closed
captions and then switch on-the-fly between a choice of languages (say
Spanish/English in the USA), French/English in Canada or Maori/English (as I
demonstrate in this recent concept demo at the National Digital Forum in New
Zealand https://youtu.be/efAdRZlOuRU?t=11m ) then a Raspberry Pi is a reliable
and extremely inexpensive option that avoids being locked into proprietary
systems.

We have been looking at Xibo, and that was our top choice for a bit, however
we’ve started displaying a lot of dynamic content, mostly from our calendar for
things like the day’s program schedule, or the next available guided tours and
I’m a bit hesitant to push that kind of content to a browser that’s
historically not known for being super standards compliant. Have you run into
that issue at all Douglas?

Also, thanks for all the other links, we’ll add those to our list. Right now
Rise is at the top of our list. Does anybody have any experience with them?
https://www.risevision.com/

The flexibility is attractive, but the prices on their hardware is very
reasonable, cheap enough to order it in for a test to see how well it works
before deploying across all screens.

My museum uses Industry Weapon. http://industryweapon.com/

I'm new here, but so far so good. Seems like there's a lot we can do with
it. It meets all of your requirements; the CMS could always be better
designed, but it works.

[MCN-L] Digital Signage options

2015-12-08 Thread Shane Richey
We have a number of digital signage installations through our museum that we
use for way finding, schedule/program information, etc… We have been using
SMP-WEBDUO players to manage the content for the last 4 years, but we’re
getting to a point where the hardware is starting to show its age. Breaking
down, crashing, shutting down unexpectedly. We would like to replace the
hardware and the content management system that we use and was wondering if
anybody had any systems that they’ve had good luck with. The functions that we
are looking for are:
 - ability to schedule content and power on/off screens
 - central CMS that can control multiple screens
 - easy to use (the SMP-WEBDUO is a bit complicated and cumbersome to
update/change settings)
 - we’re fine with browser based systems, but would like them to be modern
browsers (anything requiring IE6 gets struck from the list, and probably
ridiculed)
