Hi Stefano and Tina,

At the IIIF Meetup at Museums & the Web this Thursday, I'm planning to
mention the idea of a IIIF-oriented proposal for MCN 2018 (not
necessarily organizing it myself, but seeing if someone wants to run
with it). I'll be glad to point people wherever would be best for
that: probably the SIG's Basecamp space, if it's up by then, or the
Slack channel. And if there's any uptake on the idea at MW, I'll share
that news here and in Slack.

[MCN-L] IIIF workshop in Austin, Texas: May 11, 2018

2018-04-16 Thread Beth Haas
Please excuse cross-posting.

Less than a month away!

The Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF) invites you to attend its
fourth workshop, the last in the series being offered during the 2017-2018 VRAF
Regional Workshop
Program. Registration
is now live for The International Image Interoperability Framework: What Is It
and How Can I Use It? workshop, to be hosted by the University of Texas at
Austin, and held on May 11, 2018. This day-long workshop, is open to cultural
heritage professionals, the information, museum, and educational communities,
and anyone interested in visual culture. The VRAF is grateful to the Samuel H.
Kress Foundation for its continued support of this exciting opportunity to
partner with cultural heritage and educational institutions.

Access to image-based resources is fundamental to research, scholarship and the
transmission of cultural knowledge. Digital images are a container for much of
the information content in the web-based delivery of images, books, newspapers,
manuscripts, maps, scrolls, single sheet collections, and archival materials.
Yet much of the Internet’s image-based resources are locked up in silos, with
access restricted to bespoke, locally built applications. The International
Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) is a set of shared application
programming interface (API) specifications for interoperable functionality in
digital image repositories. The IIIF is comprised of and driven by a community
of libraries, museums, archives, software companies, and other organizations
working together to create, test, refine, implement and promote the IIIF
specifications. This workshop will provide a clear and thorough understanding
of what IIIF is, how it works, and how it can be applied to enhance image
access and resource sharing.

“The International Image Interoperability Framework: What Is It and How Can I
Use It?” workshop will be taught by Ben Brumfield and Sara Carlstead Brumfield
of Brumfield Labs. Ben and Sara have been
working with IIIF for years, participating and presenting in IIIF groups on
discovery and manuscripts, and leading workshops for museums and libraries.
Their technical projects include building IIIF support into
FromThePage, a manuscript transcription software and
developing Pontiiif, an IIIF manifest search engine.

To register for The International Image Interoperability Framework: What Is It
and How Can I Use It? and to learn more about the workshop, visit
https://vrafoundation.com/iiif_utaustin/. The fee for this day-long workshop
is $125.

For questions about The University of Texas at Austin venue, contact Sydney
Kilgore (skilg...@austin.utexas.edu) or

[MCN-L] IIIF New England Meetup - Sept 2017

2017-08-01 Thread Steward, Jeff s.
Hello MCN New Englanders,

Do you use IIIF? Are you in the midst of implementing it or just getting
started? Let's meet up and talk IIIF in September. See below for more info.

Hi all,

IIIF implementers at Harvard are eager to reach out to local New England
cultural institutions who are interested in IIIF, and we're planning a
IIIF-focused meetup this September at Harvard. Our idea is to have an
opportunity for us to connect with IIIFers at regional institutions, to share
interests, and to look for areas of potential collaboration. We're also
interested in gauging interest in a broader New England IIIF outreach event
next spring.

The meetup will be Friday, Sept .29 from 9AM-1:00PM at Harvard.

We are thinking of a ½ day meetup with an agenda of:

1. Welcome and introductions
2. Overview of the state of the IIIF universe (We'll present a recent
general IIIF presentation)
3. Reports of IIIF activity or interest from each attending institution
4. Determine areas of mutual interest
5. Discuss proposed larger New England IIIF event the week of March 12,
2018.
6. If time permits, break up into a mini-unconference on specific areas of
mutual interest.

To help with logistics, please RSVP if this is something you would plan to
attend.

Where do Bay Area museums and libraries stand with this emerging trend?

SFMOMA and Stanford University Library invite you to join us for informal
presentations + discussions about the relevancy and possibilities of IIIF in
our community.

Interested? Drop a line to collecti...@sfmoma.org to let us know you’re coming,

[MCN-L] IIIF

2016-12-07 Thread Tina Shah
Hey everyone, it seemed like more people were talking about IIIF (
http://iiif.io/) at MCN this year. It definitely came up a lot more in my
conversations! We had a good turnout at our informal lunch gathering,
talking with people from various institutions about what IIIF is, first
steps in getting setup, use cases, and we even had a great new example of
IIIF and Mirador in action by the Art Gallery of Ontario, check it out -
http://boxwood.ago.ca/collection.

For anyone interested in joining the IIIF community or just simply
learning more, join the discussion list:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/iiif-discuss.
We also have monthly calls for the IIIF Museum Interest Group that we post
about through this list.

Thanks,

Tina

[MCN-L] IIIF Museum Interest Group meeting at MW2016

2016-03-07 Thread Stefano Cossu
Hello,

In preparation to the IIIF community meeting to be held at the MoMA in New York
City next May [1] we are interested in having a pre-meeting specifically
targeted at museums. What better opportunity than the Museums and the Web
conference in April?

If you are attending MW2016, whether you have just heard about the
International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) [1] or you are deeply
involved in its development, you are invited to an informal meeting with other
museum professionals who share this interest. Please fill out and send the
following form to participate:

https://docs.google.com/a/artic.edu/forms/d/1jeqk--HCsnpiZqRfGcbVO5LC_ATvSy_YB1M1x_tmq4c/viewform

Goal of this meeting is to assess the museum-specific interests and needs
related to IIIF and what would be most valuable for them to see at the New York
meeting.

Time and place of the MW2016 meeting will be posted once we have an estimated
attendance.

Thanks,
Stefano
