[MCN-L] Portland Art Museum FREE admission, Museums & Web 2013
Dear Museums & the Web attendees: During the week of the Museums & the Web Conference, the Portland Art Museum is extending FREE admission for all registered attendees with their MW badge. The Museum is located only 8 blocks from the Marriott Downtown Waterfront Hotel, and is open Tues & Wed, 10am-5pm, Thurs & Fri 10am-8pm, Sat 10am-5pm, and Sun 12-5pm. Present your MW badge at any Admission Desk for free access to all of the Museum?s galleries and special exhibitions. Our current featured special exhibition is *Carrie Mae Weems: Three Decades of Photography and Video*, an impressive retrospective of this Portland-born photographer which presents more than 200 photographs, videos, and installations tracing the evolution of Weems? career. Be sure to also check out our *Object Stories* project while you are here at the Portland Art Museum, visiting the project gallery in the Lower Level as well as the iPad listening stations installed within the Carries Mae Weems exhibition. This storytelling initiative has become a comprehensive educational platform for engaging audiences and forging community collaborations. Nearly one thousand people from throughout Portland?most of who had never before set foot in the Museum?have participated as storytellers in this project, recording stories about personal objects as well as artworks on view in the Museum?s collection. The Museum has since extended *Object Stories* into a multi-year partnership with area middle schools, an international partnership with the Museo Nacional de San Carlos in Mexico City, and a more locally-focused proposed *Object Stories*project with the Native American Youth and Family Center in Portland. Many of these outreach efforts will also bring the storytelling process outside of the Museum through a new mobile iPad application currently in development. Learn more at http://www.objectstories.org/ or the EmcArts/ArtsFwd posting here: http://artsfwd.org/finalist-portland-art-museum/ I look forward to seeing you here at the Portland Art Museum, and I hope everyone has a fantastic time here in Portland! FYI -- Given that the MCN 2009 conference is in Portland, those planning to attend might want to check out this Sunday's Travel section of the NY Times, which features "frugal Portland" (http://travel.nytimes.com/). Some interesting highlights: free (and good) beer at a local store (to encourage shopping) and the best steaks in town are apparently at a strip joint (I won't make the obvious pun here) Also, some good tips for those seeking a more sedate experience. I had the pleasure of going to another convention in Portland a couple of years ago and I can't express how lovely and wonderful the city is. Powell's Books is a must-go (leave room in your suitcase. Seriously). There are great eats all over the place and the nightlife is active. Can't wait for MCN this year!
