Re: [MDT-OSD] Deploy CBB or LTSB with MDT and how to update it

2017-02-17 Thread Adam Juelich
What are you using to manage your devices after they are imaged?

If you are using ConfigMgr you can set up Maintenance Windows and specify
for deployments to install and/or reboot only during that time.

Re: [MDT-OSD] Deploy CBB or LTSB with MDT and how to update it

2017-02-17 Thread Wilcox, Kyle
Thanks for the resources guys, this helps.

Also, I am wondering how do you handle updates, specifically when it
requires a reboot? In my part time retail job, we just leave our computers
on 24 hours a day even when the store is closed over night. This leaves
plenty of time for IT to do whatever they need. However, in a school
setting, there is no way that would be an acceptable option from a power
usage standpoint.

I'd really hate for a computer to pop up and demand a reboot in the middle
of a teachers class. My other idea is to tell teachers to leave their
computers on overnight on specific days like patch Tuesday. However, it
seems like there shouldn't need to be that much user interaction. Sorry to
get away from the main topic of MDT, but I am just trying to figure this
out. Thanks, Kyle

RE: [MDT-OSD] Deploy CBB or LTSB with MDT and how to update it

2017-02-16 Thread Keith Garner
LTSB was created by Microsoft to satisfy a very specific segment of Windows
users, those that are legally required to certify their machines, and where the
certification process could take more than 4-6 months. And no, schools don’t
fall into this category, think Hospitals and Nuclear Power Plans.

For 99.8% of the rest of us out there, stick with CB/CBB, there is no need to
go with LTSB. Additionally, I also question the need to move from Edu to Ent
(do you *really* have a Ent SA VL license?). Stick with Educational.

Hello MDTers!

Our school district has been using MDT to deploy Windows 7 and WSUS to update
Windows 7 for a couple years now.

Windows 10 has this new Windows as a Service thing and I am trying to figure it
all out. We have a working Windows 10 deployment in MDT, but we are still
trying to decide on a version. We could do Education but some have suggested
Enterprise LTSB. Microsoft says this is only for special purpose PCs that are
not running Office. What are the pros and cons of LTSB? Are any of you using it?

Also, how much control do you get over the updates to Windows 10 with WSUS? We
don't currently have SCCM, but I suppose it's an option in the future.

Thanks,
Kyle

RE: [MDT-OSD] Deploy CBB or LTSB with MDT and how to update it

2017-02-16 Thread Sean Chapman
I use MDT to deploy 7 and 10 and use WSUS with no SCCM. We went with Win 10
Enterprise, which is pretty similar to the education SKU but the edu I think is
a lot cheaper? I had no problems doing what I wanted with MDT and Win 10 Ent.
We went with LTSB for PCs that run machines which replaced windows 7 embedded.
I don’t see any need to use LTSB over Ent/Edu, it just takes a little
configuration to get what you want done.

Thanks,
Kyle
