Both tank drivers and dissel car owners have been known to put

Somebody already mentioned this but I'll second; a failed EGR (in the
open position) can cause the type of smoke and power loss that you
describe. My first MB diesel came home that way, smoked like crazy and
could barely reach 60 mph on the flat, smoke smelled like raw fuel.
However, it was

I got pretty far with the project yesterday. I had hoped to finish
it, but that was not in the cards. Have to remove the alt bracket on

If you find 4 deg or more of chain stretch, 'tis much easier to replace
the chain and all the rails now, and you can install an endless chain

If you live in a cold climate, might be easier to install a new block

Meade has some good ideas. If the oil pan is coming off, how about front and
rear main seals?
Take a close look at the oil cooler hoses. After 24-28 years, it's about time
unless one of the cars has a replacement set on it.

If you use Gorilla Glue, it will NOT come off again.
If you think you might ever want to remove the trim in the future, the 3M is
probably a better choice. I think it stays sticky, holds well but can be
removed with some effort.

Hi Don,
Checking all the things you suggest is probably the way to go - but
shortly after buying our '91 300D 2.5 (w/99k miles on it in 2006), it would
act similarly - but only immediately after a cold starts (60F) and not

Don,
Does it shift smoothly before and then start shifting rough when it started

If so, look for a vacuum leak - especially the little hose at the 12 o'clock
