I bought VW diesels because they're fun to drive an economical. I don't think I'd buy one newer than 2005 because of the DEF/DPF (diesel exhaust fluid/diesel particulate filter) both of which cost mileage. I suspect but of course can't prove that all manufacturers cheat their emissions or fuel
