I believe the M177 tensioner is oil pressure only, which is why the 380 tends
to break chains. Lots of slap on start-up, and the plastic guide has a piece
that is easily snapped off. That broken part falls into the crank sprocket and
snaps the chain.
One cure for that it to cut the "ear" off

There are different styles... I forget exactly what the 117 tensioner looks
like at this second. 617 tensiors ratchet. I've got a M100/130/180
tensioner on my desk here thats hydraulic only. They suck in oil from a
little pool they sit it and build tension from movement of the chain.

If I didn't want it to start, I'd disable the fuel supply before I'd
disable the ignition. No reason to pour fuel in it you don't intend to
burn IMO.

Best thing to do is crank the engine without letting it start to build oil
pressure. You can just pull the wire off the coil. Many mechanics do this
when changing the oil so the engine doesn’t run without pressure to the
tensioner.
Even better, remove the plugs also and crank it. The engine
