Purists would devalue it if it had anything other than than the OE engine type.

Looks interesting. That might work.

Would a 1/4" flex head hex bit ratchet help?
It's a foot long, so you need a lot of clearance in some direction.
Once you find the right angle, the flex angle locks to hold its shape.

The GL I have with no title most likely needs this; I put it on Fakebook and
some guy can by and bought it yesterday, so I don’t have to screw with it.
Perhaps this job would be slightly easier on a lift; but still appears to be a
pain in the ass.

I decided to take the ISM (Integrated Servo Module, an electric servo motor
that a coded electronic controller causes to shift the tranny) off the ML63
this afternoon so I can see about getting it cloned to another one I pulled off
the ML350 I knackered.

I got to looking at stand alone ECUs. There’s one that’s like $1500 that can be
programmed and mapped and will get rid of all the key nonsense plus give more
power if you change the mapping. I suppose though if you used all the
electronics from a donor you could probably swap it over.
There
I would much rather have to deal with a bad engine or mechanics than paint and
body work, or rust.

I can see this as a far less expensive approach to owning one of these cars.
They're getting harder and harder to find in this condition, so locating one
that's got a really clean body/chassis/interior and just having to do an engine
swap or rebuild really wouldn't be that bad of a job.

I wouldn't pay that kind of money with a bad engine but if the car is
indeed nice, it would probably be not too hard to find a replacement, or
drop another type of Benz engine in.
I've been wondering about stand-alone ECUs for newer Benz engines. It
appears some are doing it but I don't know
Looks like they took the pictures with a telephoto lens. No way that ask will
fly with all the "Kentucky chrome" it's got. Stance is weird, too, with the
front sitting low. Probably needs a set of front springs, which are readily
available and pretty cheap - about $100/each last time I checked.
Yeah, that would be a pretty easy project once you found an engine. I'm not
sure rebuilding would make good (financial) sense unless you were doing it
yourself.

Looks nice, stupid ask if the engine is kakked
This is a 1972 280SE 6cyl gas located in Racine Wisconsin. The engine
will not start but body is in excellent condition for its age. Engine
needs to be replaced or rebuilt. Car is being sold as is. The selling
price has to be negotiable.
Looks like a new CP is in order. Could be a good deal.
