Curt,
Never seen the alternator on a motorcycle, but a stator should be a stator.
It's just a stationary winding, connected to the battery (via a
rectifier/diode in your case), that has current induced in it by the
magnetic field produced by the energized (via brushes) rotor. Bad, short,
worn,
Wilton, similar symptoms years ago on a 300SD. Crawled under looking for
brake band adjustment screw, and a slow fluid leak led me to right to it,
where I found a (factory-intentional headless) adjustment screw, coupled
with a lock nut that had loosened over 170-200Kmi. Tightened the lock nut
Sounds like bad connections at, wiring to, or dirty internal contacts in the
thumbwheel thermostat, which was, last I checked, a replaceable part of the
PBU. I don't remember buying the part at the time, and successfully
repairing the ACC, so it must have cleaned up satisfactorily. As to blower
Oil expulsion - saw this symptom on one of my own SDs when I temporarily
replaced a crankcase breather hose with a non-formed substitute. Hose
collapsed at bend, apparently restricting airflow and building pressure
fast. Result, oil all over the place, but the problem showed up almost
Sorry Peter, thought you owned the 560.
Peter, what year is the 560 SEL? I had a 75 450SEL that was a nightmare
with cutoff problems. After too many episodes to count, including fuel
filter, many sets of electronic ignition trigger points, injector cleaner,
etc, etc. my techs advised that the
Dan,
I tend to agree with Chuck re the regulator versus the motor. That said,
the lube in the motor gearset does dry out over time, and bearings do go
dry. Pull the motor and see if it runs. But first, try another 12V source
to run the motor with, preferably one that doesn't get bent in a door

I'd bet on plugged fuel filter, air leak at one of the supply hose
connections, or an algae-clogged fuel tank strainer. crack the fuel filler
cap and listen for a whoosh.
