I have a valve on the way from Trusty Rusty. The old one would not hold at
all on my mitivac. It seems like every vacuum valve is dying on this
car,(and being replaced) although I guess with 380xxx on the clock, I should
not be surprised. Especially since I drove it from Charlotte to Chicago and

What you are describing sounds like the suburbs of Chicago 50 years ago,
where communities grew around the CNW railroad stations that ran out from
the city. The railroad ran the passenger service, at a mighty slim profit,
yet still a profit. Then the Gov't came in and took over the passenger

Check to see if the forks are twisted in the triple trees. Often it's a case
of loosening the top and bottom bolts of each fork, and then twisting the
fork tube as required to align it back. You can use the fender mounts to
locate the forks correctly. I am not familiar with this particular bike

I have just started driving my 87 300D about a month ago, and have only been
getting 26.xx mpg so far. I know I have one bad vacuum valve still, and tend
to drive the turbo some what heavy footed, but though I would be doing
better than this. It has sat for 2 years so I am hoping it will improve
in the compartment and I cannot find where? Any clarifications
would be appreciated.

Its supposed to be open, its the vent for the system. You cant plug it.
Your problems are elsewhere.

Is there an exploded view of one of these valves somewhere on the CD's or
elsewhere? I don't understand their function. Why vent to the cab?

So is the normal position (no current to valve) full vacuum to the valves?
Then as they are energized, the vacuum bleeds off to the line that comes
from the cab? If so, then should I be able to test the membranes in the
valves by applying vacuum and it should hold unless the valve is energized?
No
They are the vacuum transducers. And there is no vacuum for the rest of the
system.

I checked out the thermistor yesterday and found it to be good. The wire
going from the sensor to the gauge was no good, as well as the sensor
itself. I ran a new wire, as opposed to trying to find the break, and went
to pull-a-part today where I bought 3 sensors. (as well as a BUNCH of other

I get no movement when grounding the wire. I will have to check the
wire to the thermistor to make sure it is not open. Do you know what color
wire goes to the plug in the back of the gauges, that is for the thermistor?
Also will the wire to the sensor carry a voltage?
Thanks,
Steve
Is there a fuse involved in the circuit that I should check? I am on my way

Yes, there's a fuse. Which one it is, I can't tell you since I don't have
an '87 300D.
By the way, when were all your fuses last replaced

Do the Mercedes block heaters have any sort of thermostatic control or are
they always on when plugged in? Also, is there a chart of time required to
heat up an engine based on outside temps?
Steve
Thanks. I will look for a timer so that I don't just run it all night. I
only need it for maybe 2 weeks a year and have not invested any time in
finding out about it. I should ask my sister about them as she lives in
Fairbanks and will plug her car in all over town.
