It would. What everybody else said, the MB thermostat is, unlike most others, double-acting. It simultaneously closes off the recirculation passage through the head as it opens the passage to the radiator, and that close-off is the MOST important thing it does. The sealing surface for that rear plate can become corroded or damaged, you want to check that. New thermostats can be defective out of the box, too. But it's possible you have a defective water pump.
