I wonder if the car was stuffed and whoever bought the hulk just stripped it down and sold parts or used them in some other car.  I'm not sure what you would do with a bare chassis unless you had another car or two that were crunched and wanted to transplant everything onto a "good" chassis.

Yeah that's the trade-off. Buy an older used car and you don't face depreciation but have to deal with neglect and stuff just wearing out. You likely won't recover all that expense in a sale. Buy a new car and get a warranty but lose the depreciation as well as paying the finance costs. I
