Maybe the secret to the 190D fuel economy is it's really a hybrid.

Does the low fuel light come on? I'm guessing not, or you'd have put
a gallon or two in first.
Loose, broken, or mouse-eaten wire -- check the ground somewhere in
the left rear fender, probably near the taillight.
