Or also a build up of carbon on the top of the
piston from not driving enough to warm up the
engine every time. One 300d that I got had that
problem and cleared up quite nicely after it was
blown out on a couple of one hour drives.
Don't know how to tell one problem from the other
so just

If the oil pressure is good, a loud knocking could be a plugged injector.
YMMV.
