The M272s had a bad balance shaft and timing gears that failed prematurely from the inception of production until sometime between 2007/2008. The only way to be sure if the engine is one of the affected is to get the VIN or engine number and run it through one of the online tools that give the

According to VIN this one would have the weak balance shaft parts. Do ALL these M272s have the problem eventually, or were some of them good? If it's at 174k miles and still OK, does that mean it most likely won't have this problem?
