Kaleb. FWIW. On my 85 300TD, I took the starter out the bottom. The exhaust plumbing etc made it very difficult from the top. Disconnected the wiring. A couple of long half inch extensions and an allen socket took out the bolts. Turning the steering just so allowed the starter to (fall) be removed.

Since you have a lift, isn't the real question which is easier? It may be possible to do from above, but may be easier from below if you can stand under the car. I haven't done a starter replacement on a 617, but I probably should do it on my 300SD as it has trouble cranking for more than 10-15
