FWIW. On my 85 300TD, I took the starter out the bottom.
The exhaust plumbing etc made it very difficult from the top.
Disconnected the wiring.
A couple of long half inch extensions and an allen socket took out the
bolts.
Turning the steering just so allowed the starter to (fall) be removed.
On the 616 it appears the be wide open from the top.

Same with 617 turbo. The steering linkage gets in the way of

I don't remember if the battery tray has to be removed.
With a 616, it's pretty easy. I think the top starter bolt is

Some years back I did a 240D starter from the top. Getting to the
fasteners was easier, but IIRC pulling the starter up through the
available space was tricky.

Since you have a lift, isn't the real question which is easier? It may be
possible to do from above, but may be easier from below if you can stand under
the car.
I haven't done a starter replacement on a 617, but I probably should do it on
my 300SD as it has trouble cranking for more than 10-15
IIRC I changed my 240D starter from above.

At some point I am going to need to replace the starter on a 240D. It looks
like there is enough room to do it from above. Is this correct or am I better
off getting it on the lift? What about a 617 turbo?
