Seems I recall some complaints about certain diffs getting "noisy" with
M1 gear oil. I've had it in my 300D for several years and not noticed

I should have noted before (in case anyone is unfamiliar with the

as well as using the brakes to control wheel spin, depending on vehicle

ASD has clutches for locking the differential, hydraulically activated when ABS
computer tells the ASD computer that rear axle is turning faster than front
wheels.

The maintenance sheet for that job should tell you if any additive is required,
or if the job is described in the FSM.

Too many acronyms.

Dan, your thinking of ASR. Max's E300 has ASD (limited slip/auto locking
diff) which does require special fluid. ASD was available on early'90s
diesel & some 4&6cyl gas models (201/202/124?) here in the US. What
model W140 do you have?

According to the MB spec sheets there are no additives required. Why would ASD
need an additive? There are no clutches in the differential, everything is done
through the braking system.

Kaleb, do you mean
"No[, use] dot 4"
or do you mean
"No dot 4 [allowed in your car]"

NO DOT 3 in ANY Mercedes Benz EVER!
DOT 4 only!
unless you change to DOT 5 with appropriate flushes.
I generally don't allow the DOT 3 junk on the premises.
DOT 3 will MELT YOUR PISTONS and DESTROY YOUR BRAKE SYSTEMS! (to Marshall>)

Second. Check to see if your car requires an additive to the differential, my
'95 does for the ASD.

As far as I know, DOT 3 and DOT 4 are compatible with the main
difference being that DOT 4 has a higher boiling point. So you should
be able to use DOT 4 in any vehicle that calls for DOT 3 (although the
cost is slightly higher). DOT 5 is NOT compatible and at minimum
requires a complete flush.

On W123's, DOT3 will cause the hoses to swell. So I suspect the
answer is "no DOT3" - but I don't know.

Thanks, guys. I could never remember which one was correct. I was thinking
the the later fluid (DOT 4) would actually damage some brake system components
if used in a car that required DOT 3.
Something else to add to the shopping list

I haven't used DOT 3 for at least 30 years now.
Use DOT 4, and I suspect it's what you need anyway since you have disk
brakes.

Brake fluid. DOT 3 for my W140, correct?
I have a couple of the sheets with the various specifications for fluids, etc.,
but none are old enough to cover my car. Some do have references to older
model years, but not all.
Just want to be sure before I do some brake fluid flushing this week
