good Mercedes diesel (603) mechanics in CentralWashington (State)? (RICHARD
FIne)Date: Sun, 6 Jan 2008 17:41:36 -0800 Hello,As far as checking for the
timing chain, I have already previously checked the cam lobes... they do not
move... but, as I stated in my first post, it could also be the Primary chain,
flywheel ect. not only the timing chain... that is why I was asking if anyone
knew a good mechanic in Central WA... Rick You can check for a broken timing
chain by removing the oil filler cap and looking at the cam while someone turns
the key to turn the engine over - if the cam turns - you should see 3 or 4 of
the cam "lobes" pretty easily. If nothing is rotating the TC is likely broken.
Unfortunately, a lot of damage to pistons/head/cam/etc can make repair pretty
expensive. A used engine might be a better option of finding another similar
300D and use yours for parts. Don't know if you have been on this list for
long, but there is some regular maintanence that needs to be done to monitor
the chain condition. The stretch of the chain can be measured on a regular
basis and once it reachs 5-8 degrees (? IIRC) stretch it's time to have the
chain replaced as it affects the engines performance and fuel mileage. Good
luck - Larry T (67 MGB, 74 911, 78 240D, 91 300D)www.youroil.net for Oil
