I've checked live ammo, declared it at the counter to the airline agent
and no problems. Of course, the quality of screening (people and
luggage) varies widely from airport to airport. Family in my original
story had already completed an international flight without any
suspicion or questions, but the first U.S. airport they hit spotted
something suspicious in the luggage and ran the whole bomb drill. The
few times I've been pulled aside to witness a TSA search of my bags,
they only had a positive once, when I showed my ID and explained what I
did for a living, the supervisor 'OK'd' my bag and away I went. My
point is that awareness, asking questions in advance, and being ready to
provide an answer can go a long way towards a smooth trip, and in all
the international traveling I've done, TSA seems to be far and away the
most apt to over-react.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean someone isn't trying to get
you! Hendrik - don't forget your AFDB!

Hmmm...I think the risk is minimal of triggering sensors. I have
carried live ammo in carry-on recently and had no problems.

Perhaps the shells had residue of HE rather than "cordite" (an ancient
form of gunpowder).

I once attended a course for about a week at the FLETC. It rained a lot
during the time I was there and I kept hearing "thunder" while I was in
class. I later found out that it wasn't thunder at all, but the ATF
class blowing stuff up right next to our classroom! Wouldn't you know
that when we cleared TSA at JAX several classmates and I were "selected"
to go through the puffer. I thought for sure that the puffer (which are
infamous for finding a lot of false positives) would sense the
explosives we had been around all week. Nope.

Hendrik,

The older shirts may still be around, but given the nature of the enemy
our armed forces have become much more disciplined about the disposal of
uniforms to prevent them from falling into enemy hands. If you find
some, do get an official receipt 'just in case' questions are asked on
your way back out of the country. I also recommend that you launder
them well prior to packing; the scent of fresh cordite may be detected
chemically and then Hendrik & Co get removed from an aircraft to answer
questions by law enforcement, and at the very least you miss your
flight. If you have any doubts, ask the U.S. airlines and they'll point
you in the right direction. It may be easier to mail them home. My
neighbor the airline pilot had a flight held at gate for 30 minutes
until law enforcement showed up to remove an entire family who had a
memento from their son (U.S. Air Force, old shell casing made into a
unit decoration). Very inconvenient and embarrassing for all, each
family member was removed in custody of two very large men and separated
for questioning and had to convince the local bomb squad not to blow up
their luggage, and in the end the memento was confiscated for
destruction.

My daughter Georgia says to say thanks, it is still relatively early in
the planning stages, we are taking care of the basics first, like air
tickets, documents, visas and accomodation for when we get to LaLa land.
I guess that is the thing, some places should be getable to with public
transport but other may require a hire car or taxi.
We won't be bringing much in the way of clothes, that's what walmart is
there for ;-) although I do want to try and get myself some more US
army combat shirts, I have a couple of the older ones with the 3 pattern
camouflage but they are getting a bit grubby (I wear then when I am
working because I like the big 4 pockets on them and they are tough as
leather and great in the hot weather)
http://www.pmarmysurplus.com/html/bdu_shirts_3.html I guess most decent
army surplus stores over there will have tons of them.

Hendrik
who is off to cook 200 snags for a fund raising barby, gotta get the
cash to visit you lot :-)
