You are experiencing the typical life of a Benz exhaust system -- at least 150,000 miles. Diesel engines produce somewhat less acid due to leaner mixtures and better combustion. I don't know if the soot is protective, I'd guess not, actually. It WILL greatly shorten the life of the muffler
