I'm changing out my muffler on my '91, and it is the original muffler. I've
never had a muffler that lasted so long- and when the replacement came in
today, it weighs at least 3x what mufflers on my other cars have. I think

My 78 exhaust system lasted until 98 - amazed me too! 20 years and 200K+
miles! I did have to repair one stress crack where the exhaust pipe
attaches to the auto transmission bracket about 8 years ago..
I hear
You are experiencing the typical life of a Benz exhaust system -- at
least 150,000 miles. Diesel engines produce somewhat less acid due to
leaner mixtures and better combustion. I don't know if the soot is
protective, I'd guess not, actually.
It WILL greatly shorten the life of the muffler
