Well - here is the final. 1/2 of a coil pack can and did go bad. 1st coil
pack - for the #2 and the #5 cylinder. The #5 was bad and not firing at
all. Replaced it thanks to high speed overnight by rusty and replaced and
runs like a top.
Thanks -
Peter

#1. Is it possible for 1/2 of a coil pack to go bad? Only one plug not
firing. Switched packs and it changes which one is not firing.
#2 Replace one at a time or as a group of 3?
THanks -

What do you mean by half of the coil pack? There's one per cylinder,
right? Sounds like one coil is fully failed.
#2 Replace

The plug wire thing happened on my 1978 MGB. Last spring when I took
it out of storage it was missing something fierce. I thought i had a
fouled plug, stuck valve, or bad cylinder. After much fooling around
I switched the plug wire and it has been working great ever since.

Sorry - been on my phone instead of computer. I first replaced the plugs.
Then starting screwing with wires. it was clear that the number 5 was
dead. I switched coil packs and number five fires off like crazy. the
catch is so is the plug under the bad coil - only the slave side isnt'
working.
