Yeah so far I like my W211 but the complexity is somewhat offputting. Probably
won't buy anything newer than a W126 going forward.

They say while they don’t absolutely need the ignition switch, the results will
be better if they have it so that everything is synchronized.

Totally agree, but even a car as “new” as a W211, or a W210 for that matter,
can have similar problems as they use EIS much like the GL500 does.
I love my ML550, but I do have reservations about it from that standpoint. That
being said, EIS issues are pretty rare, but when they do crop up
yes no new Mercedes for me
. my 2005 w211 is as far as I will stretch.

They want the ignition switch and key too. I wonder how difficult it will be to
remove the ignition switch.

Yup, even G-wagens are disposable. I’m not interested in ever buying a modern
Mercedes.

Expect more and more of this as time goes on. Vehicles continue to climb in
cost and complexity,
and their service life (in years) gets shorter and shorter.
'Barn finds' will eventually become 100% liabilities,
That would be very good

Dealers don’t want to fool with 1) old cars and 2) cloning electronics (esp
with used stuff) because they likely have no one who can do it and can’t
guarantee it.
Yeah you need to find the exact ECU then send both off to an outfit that can do
the cloning. There’s a bunch around that advertise
Get on ebay and find the exact part number of your old ECU, or
car-part.com. After you get the new one, get back on ebay and find a
seller doing ECU cloning. You send them the old one and the used one
you bought and they clone it and ship it back to you. Here is one I am
looking at with
But the dealer claims that they don’t want to do it because they won’t install
a used ECU. Is it just this dealer? Will another dealer do it?

I believe so. They need to clone the data from the old ECU so it will play nice
with everything else. This is especially important for the EIS system, which is
why they want those parts all together. They have to be coded together as a
group, you can’t just swap one out from the junkyard or
My mom’s 2005 G500 was involved in an accident in September. It was fixed at a
body shop recommended by the local MB dealer. The body shop was incompetent and
didn’t repair it properly- I basically gave up on them doing it right after
multiple attempts to correct their mistakes. The car was
