The FCP “free” option is almost always the best way to go unless you’re in a hurry. They use WorldPac for some of their stuff so it can often end up coming from a warehouse nearby, as it often does for me. There’s a WorldPac in Miami so if it comes out of there I‘ll often have it the next day.

I didn't see any reasonalbe way to read the codes on the '01 ML, so I coughed up the $ for a code scanner. You can read the generic codes, and turn off the CEL with it. The CEL comes on occaisonaly in the ML - it's the EGR flow. The car runs just fine either way, so I am clearing the code for now.

There is no magic repair for a worn out cylinder -- if a ring is broken (or badly stuck, etc), the liner will by now be worn to the point the rings cannot reliably seal, resulting in no compression cold. No amount of jacking around on it will do anything but increase the wear, your only real

Steve, You can pull the head, pull the lower pan, ream #1 cyl ridge ring, pop out #1 and repair the ring/replace the piston/whatever, and put it back in w/o taking the engine out of the car. More than likely the sleeve is within spec, and you can fix the car for very few bux. Rings are cheap.

Good advice, but in my experience over the years the problems is, that once you get the head off things start to multiply like wabbits. The car has 300k miles, so there's really no point in not having the head re-conditioned once it's out... then while we're at it, what about the leaking seals...
