Granted - a proper repair would require removing the timing cover.

prob'ly, but its a relatively shallow blind hole About Dx1. Helicoul
needs at least Dx2 but Dx3+ is better. Or you could bore through, then
try to make an oil proof seal with the bolt. THat is do-able, but I'd
want the timing cover off to do that.

Some aircraft aluminum parts come new with helicoils installed --- been
using them since the 1960's. Never had one fail.

I'm not sure they are better - depends on your requirements I guess. I
doubt that the solid barrel that screws into the aluminum case is better
than the wire threads of a heliciol. I read on a motorcycle forum that they
both use the same size tap for a given bolt, so the time-sert has to have

Helicoils have been an accepted fix for stripped spark plug threads for
decades. Tried and true, they do the job well and are quite robust.

When I tried to replace spark plugs on my W108 280SE the threads in the
aluminum block got stripped so I needed a tech needed to insert a
helicoil. I held my breath but it worked fine.

Time-serts are a better option.
This kit is for example only. I am not certain of the correct size needed.

If the damage is limited enough, yes, that is a possibility I think. Didn't
someone on this list try that repair?

I wonder if they make a helicoil in that size?

What model car / engine? If an OM60X, I sure hope this doesn't mean the front
timing case is damaged. That's a pretzel involved repair if it needs to be
removed and replaced.

My dad has the car and he said he was driving it to the VA yesterday and half
way there it didn’t sound right. He went to VA and came back out and it
wouldn’t start, battery dead. Said belt was real loose. I suspect the tensioner
bolt came out again from when AZ bob fixed it.
