That lasted about a year in Texas, the cops used it as an excuse to pull
over people, and the people were not happy. The legislators learned
that pretty quickly.

Indiana has a similar law. I had to remove my SpongeBob Squarepants frame
from my 2001 Altima because it obscured the state name. They have this
posted all over the BMV offices of late, too.

They did that a coupla years ago in Texas too, and everybody got really
angry about it, so they rescinded the law. It was another tool in the
police toolkit to pull someone over for some lame reason.
