If it has surface rust already, spray it with vinegar, which will clear the
rust [keep it wet with vinegar while it works. Neutralize the vinegar with
distilled water spray... dry it with a hair dryer, then coat it with your
preservative of choice.
WD40 does NOT give long term protection.
Wax will
WD-40 (if its in the assortment) to dry out any moisture, then I'd probably use
the 3-in-1 oil to wipe them down/protect them.
I've heard of people using linseed oil as a rust protectant on cars, but that
would tend to gum up on tools I would think.

rich source of information. Some tools and hardware were exposed to
moisture and I am drying them out. Some of the tools have surface rust.
