Ed Here in the UK, I don't think that a 560 has ever really been any other than a luxury vehicle for the rich, or as a high status company car. 500's and 560's are few and far between - certainly 560's are very rare.
I live in the country, get into London, or other big cities, and you'll see more. Remember that, due to the high price of gas, W126's don't make practical daily commute transport ! Because of this, it's very difficult to get a feeling for prices, or how owners maintain, but from the latest MB Club UK Gazette - 500SE auto 1987 - £ 1500 private sale - looks very tidy 500SEL 1990 - £ 9000 Dealer sale - 65K miles 500E 1991 - £ 18500 Dealer - 3M - 500E's very rare in the UK ! 560SEC 198 - £ 15000 Dealer - 54K The way I see it, the life cycle of a large 1980's 'luxury' MB in the UK would have been as follows - originally bought as 'posh' company car for a director or exec, part-ex'd for a newer model after a few years, eventually finding it's way into the 'second-hand' market, with each successive owner giving less care and maintenance, leading to an inevitable decline in condition. Having said that, I can't remember the last time I saw a rough ( unloved ) W126 on the road ( high gas prices ? ) One thing i DO know - if I ever win the lottery, or find that elusive pot-of-gold, I'll be seeking out the current owner of my 560SEL !!!
