Hi all,
The March edition of Motor Trend Classic has a neat article on some
vintage Mercedes supersedans... namely:
1) 1971 300SEL 6.3
2) 1978 450SEL 6.9
3) 1992 500E
It's 8 pages long with some pretty sweet photos and specs on all 3
models. The PDF is available here - 10MB download. Enjoy!
Cool story, Dave. Thanks for scanning it in!
$7500 is given as the typical price of a tired runner 6.9. I wonder if I
should have snapped up the one I saw for $1200 on a used-car lot a couple of
years ago? (I'd probably still be paying off the credit card bills to fix
it up, though...)

Hmm, strange how they mention door mounted seat switches on the W116.
AFAIK they first came about on the W126.

I wondered about that too.
I looked endlessly for a decent 6.3 or 6.9 about 15 years ago but couldn't
find one that wasn't crapped out so gave up and instead settled for a
300SE L 3.5 that had been well looked after. The 3.5 was plenty quick and
expensive to maintain, and quite satisfying to own
exactly

And they said $20K for a 500E? I thought those things were going for $50K
now?

those prices are WAY inflated for the 6.3 and 6.9. Decent 6.9's will
run around 4k or less.

No way any factory 124 goes for anywhere near $50K, except maybe a late
Cabriolet in mint condition.

On 3/23/06,
have no clue what those values are. The E60
Limited is my dream car... thought only a dozen were built worldwide
