In my 82 300SD, it's mainly at low speeds, and is loudest at around 45 mph under light throttle. Goes away when throttle lifted. Audible at highway speeds, but less so than at 45. Also, there's evident gear lash. Mine is a confirmed worn RP. I would not think those come on suddenly--mine's
