The oil pumps are a known wear out item and are housed in the aluminum
timing cover. Wear results in low oil pressure and the fix usually
requires both to be replaced. Mine went from 15 psi to 60 psi at hi
A buddy of mine has one of the "old" Cherokee pickups (age unknown) he
got for towing it home -- needed a carburetor, I think. Pretty
distinctive now -- paint roller paint job, it really stands out! -- and
gets a whole 10 mpg!
