96, 97, and 1/2 98 have the inline P7100 mechanical injection pump on the 12-valve motor. Very similar to the pump in the OM603, in that respect. My 97 (stickshift) can get 25-26MPG on a highway trip, on stock tires and me holding it to about 60MPH. That IP is _not_ destroyed if the lift pump goe

Look at the layout to see if it fits your mission. When we were looking for our truck, we wanted a single cab and 8' bed. The only US truck that had usable room behind the front (only) seat was the Ford. My first choice would have been Chevy for the reasons Kleb mentioned, but it was quickly ruled
