Allan These folks have a rod for cast iron. I have successfully used their aluminum rod but have not tried the HTS-528 rod for cast iron yet, although I have some. Their trick is that the rods melt and flow at a temperature below what the metal will melt, yet bonding and strength occur.

I've glued cast iron with epoxy which had steel filler, had the part break agains but not where I glued it. I used 6 hours to set steel filled epoxy (not the 5 minute kind), worked it thoroughly into both sides of the break, and then clamped it together very tightly, and let it set for two days

You don't need to heat the whole thing just the area you want to weld, we fixed an old seed drill with me haeting the hub with a gas axe and the boss welding. He had a welding helmet and I got welding flash. Then got to spend the next week resowing a few fields in an open cab tractor, whilst
