Today I found that the CD/DVD drive is no longer recognized by the laptop
(does not show up in the device manager, nor in Windows Explorer). It has
power, opens and closes fine and the green light comes one, but no-worky.
Online research indicates that the problem may be a fault in the nvidia

My niece's Toshiba lost its optical drive. IIRC the drive showed up in the drive
list until you put a disk in it but no disk would recognize.
Paid $9.99 for a used one with free shipping on eBay. Took out one screw, yanked
the old drive out, shoved the 'new' one in, replaced the screw, and back in
Look on ebay for that model if you want another like it, you can
probably find one dirt cheap and just swap out the HD to keep all your
stuff. Or buck up and buy a newer machine, which is likely crap, but it
will be newer. I needed one to replace an old laptop I was using on my
CNC machine,
Back light is failing. Maybe a laptop repair shop can split the case and hook
in a set of new bulbs. Better theory would be to hasten down to the nearest
electronics shoppe and get a 15.6 $250 replacement. Use it like you stole it
and replace in a four years

Dan,
It's an HP Pavilion dv6700, the service tag says dv6809wm. I can send you
the s/n and p/n if needed.

PC Guru's,
My HP laptop (which is over six years old) is finally starting to die.
Twice now the screen has gone dark. If I shine a bright light into the
screen I can see the display, and shut-down the laptop. Re-starting the
laptop immediately restored the screen the first time this happened.
Probably the cable from the main board to the inverter. Could be the inverter
or a lamp, but I would bet on the cable first.
A fairly easy DIY repair if you're careful and take your time.
What's the model number?

Evertek.com has good deals on refurbs and such. You have to register
as a reseller or business to get prices, or you could just call them
for a price. $300 will generally get you a decent laptop, or they
have Macbooks for 300 to 1200

Let me know if you have a source for parts.

HP has a really good parts and support site to get the part numbers and

the same.
If you look around you should find

Thanks Russ, I'll check them out.
Looks like my problem is the cable, I've got to catch it in the act to
diagnose further. Problem has happened twice in the last thirty days.

Has the screen gone pink too? More likely a bad fluorescent bulb at
the bottom of the screen than a bad inverter cable.
